Shoe-thrower runs for office

A man who threw his shoes at former US president George W Bush during a farewell visit to Iraq in 2008 is now running for a seat in the country's Council of Representatives.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi, 39, recently announced his campaign to run in the May 12 parliamentary elections and has even hinted at running for the presidency.

Al-Zaidi was arrested after the footwear attack and sentenced to three years in jail, but only served nine months before his release.

The journalist left Iraq and spent the better part of a decade in Lebanon, before returning two months ago to launch his campaign.

City's war on fast food

Venice officials have made yet another attempt to reduce the impact of mass tourism by banning takeaway food outlets from opening in the city.

The regulation will prevent any new pizza outlets, kebab shops and street food stalls from opening in Venice, as well as the outlying islands of Murano and Burano, for the next three years.

The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, approved the policy on Wednesday in a bid to manage the amount of litter in the city and deter tourists from eating on church steps, historic bridges and canal banks.

This is the latest in a series of policies introduced to curb overtourism in Venice. Other recent announcements include segregating tourists from locals, banning cruise ships of a certain size from docking in the city, and prohibiting new hotels from opening in the city.

Plastic-free bottle invented

A British inventor claims to have invented a plastic-free, single-use water bottle that can decompose within three weeks.

This fully biodegradable bottle, developed by James Longcroft, aims to replace plastic bottles and help save the world's oceans from plastic waste.

The outer lining of the bottle is made out of recycled paper donated by businesses, while the waterproof inner lining is made with a composite material Longcroft has developed himself.

All the constituents of the bottle can fully decompose within three weeks when left in water or landfill, and can be eaten by sea creatures. The steel cap on the bottle will rust and fully decompose in about a year, Longcroft said.

He is still waiting for patents and started crowdfunding for the bottle last Monday. He hopes to see the bottles available in stores by the end of the year, and sold for 85 to 90 pence.

Serving coffee with warnings

Starbucks Corp and other roasters and retailers must serve up a cancer warning with coffee sold in California, a Los Angeles judge has ruled.

Superior Court judge Elihu Berle said in a published ruling that Starbucks and other coffee sellers did not show the risk from consuming acrylamide, a possible cancer-causing by product created during coffee roasting, was offset by benefits from drinking coffee.

The Council for Education and Research on Toxics (CERT), a nonprofit group, sued some 90 coffee retailers, including Starbucks, on grounds they were violating a California law requiring companies to warn consumers of chemicals in their products that could cause cancer.

Attorney Raphael Metzger, who represents CERT, hopes the final ruling will lead to a settlement where coffee sellers reformulate their product to remove acrylamide, as potato chip sellers did after a similar lawsuit.
