【析】elementary, rudimentary和fundamental都有“基本的”之意。elementary表示“问题浅显的”,还可以指“入门性的但必要的简单原理”;rudimentary指“事实或知识易懂”,即“最基础的”;fundamental表示“某事物的基础性或起点性因素”,多是精神方面的。

stealthy [ˈstelθi]
【释】a. 鬼鬼祟祟的;秘密的(doing things quietly and secretly; done quietly and secretly)
【例】The scout made a stealthy approach to the enemy position. 侦察兵秘密地接近了敌人的阵地。
thorny [ˈθɔːni]
【释】a. 棘手的,困难的(difficult to deal with)
【例】I can find a solution to this thorny problem. 我可以找到解决这个棘手问题的方法。
uppermost [ˈʌpəməʊst]
【释】a. 至上的;最重要的(in or into the highest or most prominent position)
【例】The economy appears to be uppermost in people's minds. 经济似乎是人们最关心的事情。
venomous [ˈvenəməs]
【释】a. 有毒的(capable of producing poison)
【例】The adder is the only venomous snake in Britain. 蝰蛇是英国唯一的一种毒蛇。
whopping [ˈwɒpɪŋ]
【释】a. 巨大的,庞大的(extremely large)
【例】Mary has a whopping pile of laundry to do this weekend. 玛丽这周末有一大堆衣服要洗。
arcane [ɑːˈkeɪn]
【释】a. 神秘的(not explained and difficult to understand)
【例】These arcane customs are attractive to the tourists. 这些神秘的习俗对游客来说很有吸引力。
aromatic [ˌærəˈmætɪk]
【释】a. 芬芳的,芳香的(pleasing to smell)
【例】This type of honey is slightly acid, and has an aromatic flavour. 这种蜂蜜味道略酸,散发着香味。
clandestine [klænˈdestɪn]
【释】a. 秘密的,暗中从事的(secret and often illegal)
【例】Because of the disapproval from parents, the young lovers had to make a clandestine date in the park. 因为父母的反对,这对年轻的恋人只能在公园里偷偷约会。
covert [ˈkʌvət, ˈkəʊvɜːt]
【释】a. 秘密的,隐密的(not openly practised, avowed, engaged in, accumulated, or shown)
【例】What they have done is a covert threat to our future development. 他们所做的事情对我们未来的发展形成暗中威胁。
cryptic [ˈkrɪptɪk]
【释】a. 神秘的(with a meaning that is hidden or not easily understood)
【用】a cryptic message 神秘的信息
【例】There is a cryptic smile on the old man's face. 那个老人脸上挂着神秘的笑容。
embryonic [ˌembriˈɒnɪk]
【释】a. 开始的(just beginning to develop and grow)
【例】The project is still in its embryonic stage. 工程仍处于初始阶段。
enigmatic [ˌenɪɡˈmætɪk]
【释】a. 神秘的,高深莫测的(difficult to understand)
【例】Little is known about this solitary and enigmatic writer. 世人对这个深居简出、高深莫测的作家知之甚少。
eventual [ɪˈventʃuəl]
【释】a. 最后的,最终的(happening or existing at the end of a process or period of time)
【例】All the citizens are happy for the killer's eventual capture and imprisonment. 所有市民都为杀人犯最终被缉拿关押而感到欢欣鼓舞。
fleeting [ˈfliːtɪŋ]
【释】a. 短暂的,飞逝的(passing swiftly)
【例】The fans caught a fleeting glimpse of their idol as she ran into the car. 粉丝们在偶像跑进车里之前瞥见了她。
gargantuan [ɡɑːˈɡæntʃuən]
【释】a. 巨大的,庞大的(extremely big)
【例】The whole of Washington is under the shadow of this gargantuan alien craft. 整个华盛顿都笼罩在外星人飞船的巨大阴影下。
immobile [ɪˈməʊbaɪl]
【释】a. 固定的,静止的(incapable of being moved; not moving)
【例】Sophie sat immobile for a long time. 索菲坐在那里,很长时间一动不动。
impermanent [ɪmˈpɜːmənənt]
【释】a. 暂时的(not permanent)
【例】To meet the demands of workers, the board of the company proposed an impermanent policy. 为了满足员工的要求,公司董事会提出了一条暂时的政策。
inexplicable [ˌɪnɪkˈsplɪkəbl]
【释】a. 无法解释的(impossible to explain)

【释】a. 棘手的,困难的(difficult to solve or understand)

【释】a. 有气味的(having or giving off an odour)
【例】The rose is an odoriferous flower. 玫瑰是一种气味芬芳的花。
pernicious [pəˈnɪʃəs]
【释】a. 有害的,致命的(very dangerous or harmful, especially to someone's moral character)
【用】be pernicious to 对…有害
【例】They were infected by a pernicious virus. 他们感染了一种致命病毒。
pliant [ˈplaɪənt]
【释】a. 易弯的;柔软的(soft and changing shape when pressed)
【例】We found a sapling with the pliant body on the rock. 我们在岩石上发现一棵柔软的小树苗。
redolent [ˈredələnt]
【释】a. 芬芳的,芳香的(having or emitting fragrance)
【例】The air was redolent with the smell of grass. 空气里有一股青草的香味。
secluded [sɪˈkluːdɪd]
【释】a. 与人隔绝的,隐退的(living in seclusion)
【例】The old lady led a secluded life. 那位老妇人过着与世隔绝的日子。
transitory [ˈtrænsətri]
【释】a. 短暂的(of brief duration)

unavoidable [ˌʌnəˈvɔɪdəbl]
【释】a. 不可避免的(impossible to stop from happening)

【释】a. 诚实的;真实的(truthful, honest)
【例】His son was veracious but unkind. 他的儿子很诚实却不够善良。

【释】a. 剧毒的,恶毒的(extremely infectious, malignant, or poisonous)
【例】A very virulent form of the disease appeared in Belgium. 比利时出现了一种恶性疾病。
