From Water to Land
A salamander also goes through metamorphosis. First,it hatches from an egg. Then, it starts life as a larva. Yet a salamander isnot an insect. It is an amphibian (两栖动物). An amphibianis an animal that lives part of its life in water. It also lives part of itslife on land.
Salamander eggs hatch in the spring. The parents donot take care of the larvae. The larvae take care of themselves. A salamanderlarva is like a fish. It lives in water. It has gills(鳃). These gillslet the salamander breathe underwater. A salamander lives in water for aboutthree months. It eats snails (蜗牛) and crickets (蟋蟀). It growslarger.
The salamander‘s body begins to change in the summer. It loses its gills. It grows lungs (肺). Lungs willlet it breathe air on land. Now the salamander is all grown up. It cannotbreathe underwater anymore. It moves onto land.
The next spring, male and female salamandersreturn to the pond where they were born. The females lay their eggs in thewater. The cycle begins again.
Every animal has a life cycle. Some animals change alittle as they grow. Other animals change a lot. Some life cycles are short.Others are long. The next time you see a newborn animal, remember this. A newlife cycle has just begun!
