The organizers of the Oscars ceremony on Friday scrapped a plan to award four Academy Awards during commercial breaks in the telecast, following an uproar by Hollywood filmmakers, actors and others. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced earlier that the Oscars for best cinematography, film editing, short films and makeup/hairstyling would be presented during the commercials in the telecast.

The academy said edited versions of the winner acceptance speeches would be included later in the live broadcast. The plan is part of an effort to make the Oscar telecast shorter and boost television viewership. A total of 24 Oscars are handed out at the Hollywood ceremony. Organizers have pledged to trim its duration by about 40 minutes to three hours this year.

The Palace Museum, or the Forbidden City, will allow late-night visits for the first time in celebration of this year's Lantern Festival. The museum announced on its official website on Sunday that the "Lantern Festival night in the Forbidden City" will be held for two consecutive nights on Feb 19 and 20. 
为庆祝今年元宵节，故宫将首次开放夜间场。故宫博物院17日在官网上宣布，2月19日和20日晚间将举行"紫禁城上元之夜"活动。

The main locations open to the public will be the Meridian Gate exhibition hall, the Gate of Supreme Harmony, the East Wall, the Gate of Divine Might and other areas. It marks the first time the museum will be open to the public for free at night for the past 94 years, and the first time the large-scale ancient buildings in the Forbidden City will be decorated with lights. 
向公众开放的是午门展厅、太和门、东城墙、神武门等区域。这将是博物院94年来首次向公众开放免费夜场，也将是紫禁城内古建筑群首次被大规模点亮。

After the announcement, tickets sold out within minutes and the ticket booking system broke down - too many people visited the website at the same time. Also, "Night tour of the Palace Museum" has become one of the hottest topics on Sina Weibo, gaining more than 330 million hits among the online users.

Wang Jingchun and Yong Mei won Silver Bear awards as best actor and best actress for the Chinese movie "So Long, My Son" at the Berlin International Film Festival on Saturday. It was the first time both awards had been given to Chinese actors.

The film, directed by Wang Xiaoshuai, tells the stories of grassroots Chinese families and the changes in Chinese society over the past 30 years. The story of one family dealing with the loss of their son has moved many viewers to tears. "Synonyms", co-produced by France, Israel and Germany, won the Golden Bear for best film.

US President Donald Trump on Friday invoked emergency powers, given to the president by the 1976 National Emergencies Act, to justify repurposing federal funds to pay for a southern border wall, which was one of his signature 2016 campaign promises and is opposed by Democrats.
