In the past decade, however, a new Christmas tradition has emerged in the form of John Lewis' Christmas TV advert. For many people, the launch of the department store’s festive TV ad campaign now marks the official countdown to Christmas, as people tick off the shopping days until the 25th of December.
② The release of Christmas adverts has become an annual cultural event, with a host of big brands competing to create campaigns that tug at the heartstrings. John Lewis is widely regarded as the one to beat when it comes to Christmas marketing.
③ These big-budget ads also have the power to send the artist who performed the song to the hallowed Christmas number one spot in the music charts.
④ This year’s hotly-anticipated John Lewis’ ad features a little girl on a magical journey with her friend Excitable Edgar, a green dragon.
⑤ Unfortunately, the epic advert has reduced many younger viewers to tears, prompting the retailer to apologise. According to parents, many little ones were distraught when Edgar melted the snowman. Other viewers posted that ‘dragons just aren’t very Christmassy’.
