Movie Review: 1917

A World War I story made by director Sam Mendes that follows the exploits of two Lance Corporals Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay) assigned to deliver a message to an isolated regiment about to advance against a retreating enemy. 

The film also stars Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch and Richard Madden.

The film is beautifully shot and designed to look like it is filmed in one long take. It’s very effective and gives off the feeling that we are constantly following the two leads as they progress through the trenches and battlefields of France.

It is a very effective experience - there are some incredible scenes in the war torn French city of Écoust that are beautifully lit and shot that will linger in your mind for a long time after viewing.

A very effective war movie. I would love to watch this film as part of a doubleheader with Nolan’s “Dunkirk”.
