Exceptfor Us: The Multi-generational Subjects on the Globe
SunXiaoya
In thefar and wide galaxy only a glance is thrown back.
Then ablue globe comes into sight: our homeland.
Hewears a king-sized face mask, shuttling among the stars,
Insearch for the rotating 卍in the dim and sad halo.
Neverhas the cosmos, steadfast and silent, concerned itself with
Thepast, the present and the future of a particle,
As inthe body quickly deformed and inflated in the returning warmth;
As inthe landscape of its prime but seniled by the desert and pollution.
Even nosentient being ever discovered within 4.6 billion years
Thecrackings and explosions of the waters and lands.
Afterthe fire and flood civilization and prosperity revived
Withthe incremental arrogance, prejudice, coldness and greediness.
War,plundering, and carnage have re-charted the map of yesterday.
Theblood of human beings rippled across the blue surface of the globe.
In thetransparent space, the peach petals broke in solemnly.
Countlesssouls were hovering in the non-luminosity and samsara.
Old wisdom and premonitionhave long been lost and forgotten.
Human beings are running inthe reverse direction with high-techs, running.
The sentient beings areassigned by us to diverse interfaces.
In the distance which onlythe strained eyes can see stand the capitalized I.
It is the alienated I! Whocan bring into recollection
The light of tranquility andharmony in the antiquity.
The awakened soul lies burieddeep like a seed,
Awaiting the procreation ofthe species along the life-and-death chains
There comes the summon fromthe revival of the myriad phenomena.
Alas, the inherent naturecomes up with the tender love.
Lust lures the forebears tosmear off the moral codes and oaths.
Collaboration and harmonyhave been replaced by conquest.
The accelerated modernpeople, immunity shield in hand,
Have been subdued to thevehicle of the virus, the destroyer.
The pandemic has swept up themad confidence of the city.
The locusts have swallowed the vivacity of the wide wilderness.
The nightmare has duplicatedthe Achilles’ heel of the history.
Different mother tonguesinscribed the similar metaphors:
Who is nobler in the face oflife!
Who is more beautiful in theface of death!
Who is more privileged in theface of calamity!
Who is more composed at themoment of anxiety!
In the recesses of the remotevalley a song drifting on and on
Has disturbed the migrantbirds’ flight back.
Have the expansiveconstellations ever heard the groans of the dust?
Except for us:
The multi-generationalsubjects on the globe.

Note:
卍 is anarcane icon which could be found across the world in antiquity and consideredas the symbol of the sun or fire. In Sanskrit, it is pronounced as Svastikawhile Wu Zetian, the empress who reigned in the Tang dynasty, set itspronunciation as that of the character 万wan. Itconnotes the auspicious clouds over the sea. In many Buddhist sutras, it isrecorded that 卍 could be found on the chest, hands, feet or waist of Buddha and is one of Buddha’s 32 phases and 80 kinds, as thevirtuous manifestation on Buddha and Bodhisattvas.
