The year after that Malone and Payton join the Shaq and Kobe Lakers and one of the most bold ring chasing attempts the league has ever seen.Unfortunately for Malone, he dealt with knee injuries missing 39 regular season games, he was back in time for the playoffs, but he re-aggravated the knee in the NBA finals where they lost in five games to the Detroit Pistons which was then the conclusion of his career.
Looking at the totality of his career accomplishments, Malone is 2nd all time on the NBA scoring list, and 7th all time in rebounds. For his career he averaged 25 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and1.4 steals on 51.6% shooting. That's an incredible stat line for a single season.
Before in 19 year career, that's absolutely astonishing. Now it's important to note the Malone's game wasn't without its flaws, the biggest one being his issue with turning the ball over, other than the fact that one of the most iconic place from him was a turnover. Malone has the most turnovers in NBA history.
Now it's longevity does play a part of that without question, but it's surprising with all of his strength come Malone got the ball stripped from him as often as he did. Especially when you consider that he was a power forward. The next four players on the turnovers left behind Malone were all primary ball handlers. You would expect more turnovers from them as they run the offense and are naturally more ball dominant.
Again it doesn't do all the other great aspects of Malone's game, but it is important to keep in mind, he was a 14 time all star. Made 14 all NBA teams and 4 all defense teams. In total he played 19 seasons in the NBA and made the playoffs and all 19 years of his career. Of all the players in league history Malone is tied with John Stockton and Tim Duncan for the most seasons played without ever missing the playoffs. There's a few ways to look at Malone's basketball career, someone will argue that Malone made stock and look better than it was and someone argue that stocked it made Malone looked better than he was, but honestly I hate those arguments. It's no secret that throughout NBA history, great players have benefited from playing with other great players. None of the greatest players of all time achieved. All of their success completely on their own. Did the two Utah stars make life easier for each other? Absolutely! But what they have still been a lead players without each other? Definitely!
They both had skills and special traits that would have made them successful and stand out on any team. A couple of other thoughts for you guys to ponder. If it wasn't for Michael Jordan, Karl may have two championship rings and if you did what is resume then be good enough to be considered as the greatest power forward of all time even without the rings. Is he the greatest player who never won a championship?
