17.The Welland Lakes contain many relics of human culture. Several radio’isotope/ˌreɪdiəʊˈaɪsətəʊp/(放射性同位素) dates indicate that humans have been exploiting the area for at least 30,000 years. Human activities in the lake are not limited to ancient times. Research data show that human beings lived here for a long time and left the earliest remains of modern human activities in the world. A 26,000-year-old cremation site (the earliest in the world) has been found here, along with archaeological discoveries of a 30,000-year-old ochreˈəʊkə(r)/(赭色的)burial site, remains of large marsupials and 18,000-year-old grindstones and stucco/ˈstʌkəʊ/(灰泥).

· 18.In 1969, archaeologists found many human remains in the area, such as simple tools used by primitive /ˈprɪmətɪv/(原始的、远古的) people. The tools were made of freshwater(淡水) shellfish(贝母), stone and bone, and had been burned. After many investigations, more than 200 stone tools with sharp tips were found. The stone tools were made 18,000 years ago, and primitive people used them to plant seeds and get prey. In addition, archaeologists have found a large number of fossil animal bones.
