The Côte de Beaune is the most importantarea for white wine, though red wine is also made and there is one grand cru for redwine. The most important villages (from north to south) areas follows:
Aloxe-Corton,Pernand-Vergelesses,Ladoix-Serrigny,Beaune,Pommard, Volnay, Meursault,Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet,Saint-Aubin.
Aloxe-Corton AOC, Pernand-Vergelesses AOC and Ladoix-Serrigny AOC – these three villages cluster round the hill of Corton. Whilst thevillages and their premiers crus mostly produce red wines, the hill’s mostfamous vineyard, Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru AOC is exclusively white. Thesubstantial Corton Grand Cru AOC has many lieux-dits within it. It is mostlyplanted with Pinot Noir, but can produce Chardonnay.
The villages of Beaune,Pommard, Volnay, Meursault and Saint-Aubin have no grands crus but manyimportant premiers crus.
Beaune AOC – Predominantly red wines butwhite wines are made too. Leading premiers crus include Le Clos des Mouches andLes Grèves.
Pommard AOC – Red wines only, the most prestigious premiers crusinclude Les Rugiens and Clos des Épeneaux.
Volnay AOC – Red wines only,sought-after premiers crus include Clos des Chênes and Les Caillerets.
MeursaultAOC – White wines only with well-known premiers crus including Perrièresand Genevrières.
Puligny-Montrachet AOC and Chassagne-Montrachet AOC –Puligny-Montrachet produces exclusively white wines; a small amount of red atboth village and premier cru level is produced in Chassagne-Montrachet. Betweenthem stretch the most celebrated white grand crus of Burgundy, including LeMontrachet AOC and Bâtard-Montrachet AOC.
St Aubin AOC – White wines only.Leading premiers crus include Sur le Sentier du Clou and En Remilly.
As in theCôtes de Nuits, the next tier of village appellations has also become soughtafter including St Romain AOC (mainly white), Auxey-Duresses AOC (mainly red),and Santenay AOC (mainly red).
