Job boards are only a starting point. Despite running a job platform, We will be the first one to point out that it really is the first stepping stone of many to actually landing a job or even an interview. Job boards give you a good idea of what type of jobs are out there, even if it might not be your dream job. If its in a relevant industry or field, read the job listings anyway and get a good idea or feel as to what employers are really looking for.

Take note of the really comprehensive job listings that list what is required of the candidate, double check to make sure you’ve developed the right soft skills, analytical skills or technical knowledge generally expected for the type of position you’re going for. JingJobs is great for this purpose as it has a great search and filtering system to sort through all open positions. We also do background checks on companies to make sure they are legitimate before allowing the listing to be published.

Resumes. This may seem like an easy one as everyone has a CV, but having the right layout and easy to read format really makes a difference for recruiters who spend all day sifting through resumes. If you’re interested in applying for jobs at local Chinese firms or SMEs, definitely make sure you have your resume translated into Chinese, as most local recruiters at smaller firms do find it a headache to read your resume in English. This is the same for larger international firms, if your resume is in Chinese, get it translated into English to suit international working standards. Get your resume looked at by a mentor, family friend or any contacts you have within the industry you’re applying for and ask for feedback. For more information on resumes, listen to our previous podcast which focuses on how to write a great resume and what you should include.

Networking. In America, over 45% of entry level hires are candidates that were referred to the company by an existing employee. In China, you can be sure that successful referrals happen more often than not. If you’re a young jobseeker without much experience, you can still create a solid professional network through various networking events, social events, meetups and through LinkedIn. The more people you meet, the higher your chances of expanding businesses, creating new deals and collaborations and finding out about open positions and then being referred for said position. JingJobs updates our wechat and events weekly to include all international networking events and social events on each week in Beijing and Shanghai. Follow our wechat subscription channel or check out jingjobs.com/news for a full list for you to choose from!
