The course took place in my first English class in my junior year at high school, and the teacher was John, who is originally from Canada but has lived in China for ten years. I still remember the first time I met him during that class – John walked into our classroom, full of energy, brought a guitar, and introduced himself by performing a song he wrote on his own. Everyone was attracted to him.

Because of this attractive introduction, I found John was such an interesting and energetic person. Later, in that course, we did not do any grammar or vocabulary practice or learning like other usual English classes. Instead, John asked us to take a piece of paper and write a poem about ourselves. He gave us some hints that we could introduce our hobbies, daily life, passion, etc. I hesitated about what to write at first, but John kindly asked what I enjoy doing in my spare time.

Finally, I wrote a poem about my passion for music and the piano. There were 26 people in my class, and 26 totally different but great poems came out in that class. During the last 10 minutes of the class, John encourages us to present our poems. After taking John’s advice, I was confident, so I raised my hands and presented my poem to the class.

It was a unique English class I had in my life, and it really impressed me a lot. Not only John but his classes are always interesting and impressive, and in the whole year studying with him, I gradually find the charm of English. It is not just about those boring vocabularies. It’s more about using it as a tool when communicating with others.
