8Lame breakup lines

1.     “It’s not you, it’s me.”

Translation: It’s definitely you! I just want to convince you that you havenothing to do with the breakup.

This one’s the oldest line in the breakup handbook and hasbeendone to death and it’salmost completely lost itscredibility at this point. It’sa classic excuse when people want to avoidconfrontation. This breakup line is not fair because it doesn’t givethe other person in the relationship a chance to find out what really wentwrong. If it’s really not you, but them that is the problem, they shouldelaborate on the problem.

2.     “You are too good for me.” 

“I’m not goodenough for you.”

“You deservebetter.”

Translation: I’ve been cheating on you and don’t have the energy to hide itanymore.

This is just an attemptto alleviate their own guiltyconscience for a sh*tty circumstance they put themselves in. The “I’m not good enough for you” line isn’t going tofool anyone. If someone was really too good for you, why on Earth would you break up with himor her? This line is ultimately just acop-outso they don’t have to tell you that they just don’t like youlike that anymore.

3.     “I can’t keep hurting you.”

“I hate seeingyou in pain.”

Translation: I know I’m an as*hole, I clearly am not changing and I don’t want tobe in this relationship anyway.

They are apologizing fordoing something wrong only to realize that they aren’t actually sorry becausethey’d do it again given the opportunity. This is toplace the blame on themselves so they can get out of a relationship they no longer care about.

4.     “I’m just trying to findmyself and I need to be alone to do that. “

“I just need to focus on my work/study/…right now. “

“I am going through a lot with my job/career…now.”

Translation: I havealready figured myself out and I realized that I want someone better than you. I need to explore a lifewithout you in it.

They don’t care about you enough to make you one of their life prioritiesanymore. Theyrealize that you are not the one for them and don’thave the guts to tell you the truth. Instead, theyshift the focus onto themselvesrather than the person they are breaking up with.

5.     “I’m not ready forrelationship.”

  “I am scared of commitment.”

Translation: I was onlyusing you for sex/other conveniences…

There was never anyemotional connection, and the relationship is totally one-sided. They have absolutely no interest in any commitment and can’t imagine aserious future with you.

6.     “Things are moving toofast for me.”

“I want to take things slow.”

Translation: I think you like me waymore than I like you.

If you actuallylike someone, you’re most likely not going to mind if he or she is picking up the pace in yourrelationship. If you have been together for some time, telling you that thingsare moving too fast is just an excuse for when they realize that you like themmore than they like you.

7.     “I don’t think we aremeantto be.” 有缘无份

“It’s just notmeant to be.”

Translation: I don’t think you are the one for me and I willblame it on faterather thantelling the home truth.

When you are in arelationship you truly care about, you tend to try everything to protect it. Ittakes efforts from both sides and communication rather than fate to make arelationship work.

8.     Silence… (or breaking upwith you in an email/text message/letter)

Translation: I am a cowardwho can’t break up with you face-to-face in a decent way, or I don’t care aboutyou enough to actually give you a reason.

Sometimes all people want is a proper closure.
