"The Cabin on Mango Street" consists of 44 relatively independent short stories, all of which take place on a small Chicago street called Mango Street. Esperanza, a girl living on Mango Street, a slum community in Latin America, was born with compassion for the pain of others and a feeling for beauty. She looked at the world around her with clear eyes and told her growth, the vicissitudes of life, the beauty of life, and the enthusiasm and dreams of youth in beautiful and tender language. Esperanza dreams of having her own house, pursuing herself in writing, gaining freedom and the ability to help others, getting away from poverty as soon as possible, and flying out of Mango Street.
