从前有一只小马，来到一条河边，要过河。但他不知道河水有多深，于是他去问小象河水深不深，小象说：河水很浅，我淌着就过去了。小马又去问小羊河水深不深，小羊说：河水很深，千万别去，上次差点把我冲走。最后小马自己去过了一下河，才发现，河水不深不浅，他正好可以渡过河去。
