Long ago, in the tiny town of Santa Cecilia, Mexico (墨西哥圣赛西莉亚) , a little girl was born to a musician (音乐家) and his wife. Their happy home was full of music and dancing until one day the papá left. He went in search of (追寻) his dream to make music for the world.

很久以前，在墨西哥有个叫圣赛西莉亚的小镇，一位音乐家和他的妻子生了个漂亮的女儿。他们一家人总是在一起听着音乐跳着舞，充满了欢乐。可是有一天，音乐家爸爸离开了，他为了追寻自己的音乐梦想，离开了家。

Out of necessity (需要), the mamá, Imelda (妈妈梅尔达), learned to make shoes. She pretended (假装) the man never existed, even tearing (撕) his face from the family portrait (肖像).

为了生计，妈妈梅尔达开始学习做鞋子。妈妈梅尔达一直假装世界上就没有他丈夫这个人。她还把丈夫的脸从全家福里撕了下来。

As Mamá Imelda’s shoe business thrived (繁荣), so did her household (家庭). Her little girl, Coco (可可), grew up and had a family of her own. Soon Coco had many grandchildren and even great-grandchildren (曾孙辈).

后来，妈妈梅尔达的鞋子生意越做越好，她的家族也在不断壮大。她可爱的女儿可可，也很快就长大了，并且有了自己的家庭。现在，可可已经有了孙子孙女，甚至还有了曾孙曾孙女。

One of them was Miguel (米格), and he loved Mamá Coco. In her old age, she sometimes had trouble with her memory, so he did most of the talking.

米格就是可可的曾孙，他很爱可可太奶奶。可可老了之后，很多事情都记不清了，所以大部分时候，都是米格在跟太奶奶说话。

Mamá Coco’s daughter was Miguel’s abuelita (米格的奶奶), and she was just like Mamá Imelda. She made sure (确保) everyone did as they should and, most importantly (最重要的是), that they followed the family rule: NO MUSIC!

可可太奶奶有个女儿，也就是米格的奶奶，米格的奶奶像极了梅尔达。她总是监督着家里的每个人，她要确保每个人都做自己该做的事，最重要的，就是要遵循家规：不要碰音乐！

But Miguel had a secret: he loved music. Singing and playing the guitar made him feel inspired (有灵感的). But he could only share his secret with (与…分享秘密) a street dog named Dante (丹丹).

但是米格有个小秘密：他太爱音乐了！唱歌、弹吉他都能激发他的灵感。但他只敢跟一条叫丹丹的流浪狗分享这个秘密。

Miguel’s idol, the late, great Ernesto de la Cruz (歌神德拉库斯), was responsible for (对…负责) the boy’s love of music.

米格的偶像就是伟大的歌神德拉库斯，是他让米格爱上了音乐。

De la Cruz was the most famous musician from Santa Cecilia. Though he met with a tragic (悲剧的) end, his star had been on the rise (在增加). Miguel wanted to be a musician just like him.

德拉库斯是圣赛西莉亚小镇最有名的音乐家，尽管他死得有些悲惨，但是他名声很好，受人爱戴！米格就想成为一个像他一样的音乐家。

Every Rivera (里韦拉家族) was expected to join the family business, whether they made the shoes or shined (擦亮) them.

（米格他们家就是里韦拉家族，）里韦拉家族里的每个人都要加入家族的制鞋事业，去制鞋或者擦鞋。

On the eve of Día de los Muertos (亡灵节), the Day of the Dead, Miguel got up the nerve (鼓起勇气) to tell them what he wanted to do.

墨西哥每年最重要的亡灵节到了。在亡灵节的前夜，米格终于鼓起勇气，准备告诉大家他热爱音乐！

But Abuelita (奶奶) didn’t let him speak. “Tonight is about family,” she said. Dropping a pile of marigolds (万寿菊) into Miguel’s arms, she led him to the ofrenda room (灵坛).

可是奶奶不让他说。“今晚是关于家庭的，”奶奶说着，就拿了一把万寿菊放在米格的手臂里，然后带着米格来到家里的灵坛前。

Mamá Coco (可可太奶奶)sat quietly as Abuelita arranged flowers on the altar (祭台) and spoke to Miguel about the importance of Día de los Muertos.

奶奶在灵坛上摆花的时候，可可太奶奶就静静地坐着。奶奶给米格讲述着亡灵节的故事：

“It’s the one night of the year our ancestors can come visit us,” she said.

“一年中只有这个晚上，我们的祖先可以到人间来看我们。”

Abuelita reminded Miguel that placing their family’s photos on the ofrenda meant their ancestors’ spirits (亡灵) could cross over to the Land of the Living (活人的世界).

奶奶还告诉米格，把祖先的照片摆在灵坛上，就意味着祖先的亡灵可以来到活人的世界了。

As soon as Miguel had his chance, he sneaked (偷偷溜) off to his attic hideout (藏匿处). There, he played his homemade (自制的) guitar and sang his heart out. He strummed (弹奏) along as he watched an old de la Cruz film. “When you see your moment (时机), you mustn’t let it pass by. You must seize (抓住) it!” Ernesto declared.

米格看大家都去忙了，就瞅准机会，溜到了自己的阁楼上，那儿是他的秘密圣地。在那儿，他能弹着自制的吉他，尽情歌唱。他一边看德拉库斯主演的电影，一边弹着吉他。德拉库斯曾经说，“当你看准了机会，就一定不能让它溜走。一定要抓住机会！”

“I gotta seize my moment!” Miguel said. Guitar in hand, he raced away.

“我要抓住我的机会！”米格说着，就拿着吉他跑了出去。
