Dying from broken heart is scientifically and medically possible

"Acute grief can cause heart damage," said Dr. Sandeep Jauhar, a cardiologist and author of "Heart: A History." There is a condition known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also referred to as "stress cardiomyopathy" or "broken heart syndrome." Often, when someone is said to die of a broken heart, it is because of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. When the condition occurs, doctors typically see that a patient's left ventricular apical, which is located within the heart, balloons. Patients may have chest pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, vomiting, nausea, anxiety and loss of consciousness. While the condition is often thought to be reversible and temporary for many — with recovery taking as long as a month  — for some it can be fatal. Despite what researchers know about this condition, the mechanism remains unknown.

Scientists create remote-controlled cyborg cockroach

While it may sound like something that has crawled out of your nightmares, cyborg cockroaches have arrived as friends rather than foes. Famously able to survive a nuclear war, cockroaches have been the inspiration for a number of technologies in recent years. Scientists in Japan have designed a new remote-controlled insect, equipped with a battery 'backpack' that is powered by solar panels. The cockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enter hazardous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged.

A Dutch city will become the first in the world to ban meat ads from public spaces in an effort to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000, will enact the prohibition from 2024. Advertisements will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting complaints from the meat sector. Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant-based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are felled for the grazing of animals, while fertilizers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen, which can contribute to air and water pollution, climate change and ozone depletion. Livestock also produces large quantities of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

New York returns $19m worth of stolen art to Italy

New York's District Attorney Alvin Bragg has returned $19m (£16m) worth of stolen art to Italy. The 58 pieces include a marble head of the goddess Athena dated 200 BC, worth an estimated $3 million. The stolen artifacts were sold on to museums and private dealers by convicted looters, Bragg said. It is the city's latest effort to return plundered goods to their country of origin - $66 million worth have been returned so far this year. Homeland Security was part of the investigation to seize and repatriate these objects to the Italians - 21 of them came from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Investigators had worked for years to track down the art smugglers' trails and locate the items that were being repatriated, according to Homeland Security officials.
