B: They say the secret of your success, inthat movie theBig Boss, which issuch a success, you rocketed to the star in Asia was that you did your ownfighting. As an expert in various martial arts in China, what did you think ofthe fighting that you saw in the movies that you studied before you became astar?

L: Well, I mean definitely in the beginningI had no intention whatsoever that what I was practicing and what I'm stillpracticing now would lead to this, to begin with, but martial art has a veryvery deep meaning as far as my life is concerned because as an actor, as amartial artist, as a human being, all these I have learned are from martialart.

B: But tell me a little bit, you’ve set upa school at Hollywood, didn't you? For people like James Garner and Steve Mcqueenand the others.

L: Yes.

B: Why would they want to learn Chinesemartial arts, because of a movie role?

L: Not really. To me or at least the way whenI teach it, all type of knowledge ultimately means self-knowledge. So therefore, they are coming in and asking me to teach them not so much of how to defendthemselves or how to do somebody in. Rather they want to learn to expressthemselves through some movements be it anger, be it determination orwhatsoever. So in other words, what I'm saying therefore is that he is payingme to show him, in combative form, the art of expressing the human body.

B: Which is acting, in a sense, isn’t it? Orit would be a useful tool for an actor to have?

L: It might sound too philosophical butit's unacting-acting or acting-unacting.

B: You've lost me!

L: So what I'm saying actually, you see, Imean it's a combination of both. I mean, here it is the natural instinct andhere is control. You ought to combine the two in harmony. If you have one tothe extreme you will be very unscientific; if you have another to the extremeyou become all of a sudden a mechanical man, no longer a human being. So it isa successful combination of both. So therefore, is not pure naturalness orunnaturalness. The ideal is unnatural naturalness or natural unnaturalness.

B: Yin Yang.

L: You right, man.

B: Can you remember the lines by Stirling Silliphant, the key lines?

L: He's one of my students, you know?

B: Was he too? Everybody!

B: There were some lines are expressions ofyour philosophy, I don't know if you remember them.

L: I remember them.

B: Let’s hear.

L: This is what it is, ok?

B: You talked in theLongstreetplayed by James Franciscus.

L: I said “Empty your mind. Be formless. Shapeless.Like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put waterinto a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes theteapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend.” Like that, yousee?

B: Alright, see, I got the idea.
