Weightlifting isn’t justthe preserve of musclebound hulks. Now women of all ages are increasinglyturning to barbells as a way of staying healthy and warding off the effects ofgetting older。

Any woman can be strong. Idon’t just mean strong in the metaphorical sense – I mean simply being able toexert force against gravity. You may think that strong women are born, notmade. You may be thinking of Olympic weightlifters straining to clean and jerkdozens of kilos over their heads, or of bodybuilders in bikinis posing andflexing. Several of the women I interviewed for this article thought that waybefore they started to lift barbells. “I thought women who lifted wereAmazons,” said one. 

But strength is not justabout appearances. It is a requirement for everyday life. Strength is what youneed if you are hoisting your carry-on luggage into the overhead compartment ona plane. 

As we age, weprogressively lose muscle mass, which studies have shown can lead to loss ofbone density and, in general, make us weaker and more frail

But barbell liftingdoesn’t just offer physical strength; it also gives women emotional and mentalconfidence.


No matter how you feelabout your body, you can always become the strongest version of yourself.
