I would always say first tip about political interview is to just do your homework, read as much as you can about what your interviewee has said on that subject, make sure you’ve got the latest up-to-date fact. You can never do too much prep I think, really, you just read around it and then hone it down to the points that you really need to get to.
Traditionally people look at political interviewing think it’s going to be hard, hard, hard, hard. sometimes you get a better result if you just drop the pace a bit, think about it a bit more laterally come at things from a different angle. You need to have a sense of the overall political picture, not just the narrow piece that you’re examining in that interview.
The point of the interview shouldn’t be that you show off a grand bit of knowledge about this particular subject or equally permit your interviewee to wax lyrical about a big subject. Particularly on broadcast news, you need to get to that point quite quickly, so you really need to keep on track and keep the focus of the interview at the front of your mind.
