Record number of students to sit for gaokao

全国高考报名1078万人

A record 10.78 million students around China are expected to take this year's all-important national college entrance exam - the gaokao - from Monday to Tuesday, the Ministry of Education said on Wednesday. It's a slight increase from 10.71 million last year, when the exam was postponed for a month to July 7 and 8 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan has urged authorities to adopt the highest standards in organizing the exam and to ensure it proceeds smoothly. COVID-19 patients and their close contacts will be allowed to sit exams in medical facilities or isolation venues if conditions permit, Sun said. 
教育部6月2日表示，今年全国高考报名1078万人，比去年增加7万人，再创历史新高。今年的全国高考将于6月7日至8日举行。2020年全国高考因新冠疫情推迟一个月，于当年7月7日至8日举行。国务院副总理孙春兰强调，要以最高标准、最严要求做好高考组织工作，确保高考平稳顺利举行。对核酸检测阳性感染者、密切接触者等考生，经专业评估、符合条件的可安排在救治场所或隔离场所考试。

The Ministry of Education said it has worked with local authorities to ensure the security of test papers and answer sheets throughout the exam. Local authorities have adopted various detection methods to prevent any equipment for cheating from being smuggled into test centers and will conduct vigorous identity checks to screen out impostors, the ministry said.
教育部表示，已会同各地严守试题试卷安全生命线。各地积极采取多种检测手段，防止各种作弊工具进入考场；并进行严格的身份检查，严防替考。

CPC members awarded commemorative medals
'光荣在党50年'纪念章颁发

Events were launched across China on Wednesday to award commemorative medals to Communist Party of China (CPC) members bearing five decades of Party membership. Eligible recipients are CPC members who would have been Party members for 50 full years or longer as of July 1, 2021, and have consistently performed well in their roles. 
6月2日，全国多地举行仪式，向健在的截至2021年7月1日党龄达到50周年、一贯表现良好的党员颁发"光荣在党50年"纪念章。

The awarding of honors, set to last until July 1, will see more than 7.1 million CPC members across the country receive the medals. The medals, measuring 50 mm in diameter, are made of copper-zinc alloy, and come in hues of red and gold. In the future, the memorial medal awarding is slated to take place once a year, around July 1.

Chinese telecom giant Huawei on Wednesday officially launched its operating system HarmonyOS 2 for smartphones, providing customers worldwide with a competitive alternative that works on a diverse range of devices. HarmonyOS, or Hongmeng in Chinese, is an open-source operating system designed for various devices and scenarios. It first launched on Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, including wearables and tablets, in August 2019.

Variants renamed with Greek letters
希腊字母命名变种毒株

The World Health Organization has proposed new names for Coronavirus variants using letters from the Greek alphabet. WHO's naming scheme will be used to label noteworthy strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, such as "Delta" for the variant first detected in India, also known as B.1.617.2. Naming variants after a geographical location - such as a country - is misleading because a Covid variant didn't necessarily emerge where it was initially identified, but people from that place are still blamed for a variant's spread. 
世界卫生组织提出用希腊字母表的字母重新命名新冠变种毒株。世卫组织将为值得关注的新冠病毒变种重新命名，比如将印度首次发现的变种毒株命名为Delta，该毒株又名为B.1.617.2。根据地理位置(比如一个国家)为变种毒株命名容易产生误解，因为变种不一定是在最先发现的地方产生的，但是那里的人们依然会因为变种病毒的传播而受到指责。

WHO's naming scheme can solve a major problem: inappropriate labels based on location can create social stigma and lead to racism. Using Greek letters provides a practical solution because the new names are easy to say, write and remember. WHO's approach has some minor limitations. Delta Air Lines probably won't be pleased to have its brand associated with a Covid variant, for example, and it's not clear what will happen after variants inevitably outnumber the letters from the Greek alphabet.
基于地点命名是不合适的标签，会造成社会污名化，引发种族歧视，而世卫组织的命名计划解决了这个大问题。采用希腊字母也很实用，因为新名字好念、好写也好记。不过，世卫组织的命名方式也有一些小小的局限性。举例来说，达美航空公司应该不希望自己的品牌名和新冠变种联系在一起，而且当变种数量不可避免地超过希腊字母表的字母数量时，又该怎么办呢？
