The question which I’m going to talk about today is the question which lots of people ask,

which is what kind of IELTS materials you’re suggested to use when preparing for the IELTS test.
就是备考雅思建议使用的材料是什么
I want to answer this by making clear that there are two types of preparation.
首先我想说明备考分为两种类型
One is preparing your English to be at the right level for what you need.
一种是使自己达到可以得到心仪分数的英语水平，
And secondly, there is short term preparation before taking the test.
一种是考前的短期冲刺
Firstly the IELTS exam is a quick test but covers all levels or a wide range of levels of English.
雅思考试的时间较短但是涵盖了各种英语水平的测试内容
It’s a bit like a mass test, for example, that covers everything from junior high school through to university mass.
举个例子，这有点像一个涵盖了从初中到大学方方面面的测试。
So it’s covering a large range.
所以它覆盖的范围很广。
So if you say with mass, how would you prepare for that kind of test？
所以，对于这种测试，你将如何准备呢？
You would recommend people to study mass whatever lever they are and try to improve.

And it ‘s the same with English.

If you want to do better in the IELTS exam over time, the way to do that is to improve your level of English.

Then when you take the test, you will get more correct.

So that’s the most important fact.

But, of course, people want to do some test preparation before taking the exam.

Preparing for the type of question that you’re going to be asked and also knowing what is going to constitute a good answer.

And particularly in the case of speaking and writing,

which is the area ,when I was examining in China, I was seeing a lot of band and also that the kind of course I teach now so I see a lot of students still with this kind of difficulty.

When I was at Manchester University when I did the IELTS test preparation course

which was a short course before taking the exam.
是那种考前短期的课程
There were between 30-60 hours for all four skills.
30-60小时来训练听说读写全科
And that’s a little bit similar to what I think now is proper.
现在我也基本上觉得这是合适的课程时间分配
Because now if I teaching speaking or writing, usually the course will be about 15 hours.
因为现在我教的口语写作课大概是15小时
Because beyond that, if you want to do more than you can do,
因为除此之外，如果你想做到更好
is practising for the exam, learning what is required, learning what the examiners are looking for.
就需要考前练习，了解考试要求，知道考官看重的得分点，
But beyond that, if you want to improve more than that,
除了这些，如果你还想要进一步提高，
or you want to do something more than preparing for the test,
或者说你不只是想应对考试
then you need to work on your overall level of English.
你需要做的就是努力提高你整体的英语水平了
It’s no good doing endless tests circles.
仅仅刷题是收效甚微的
If your English is not at a reasonable level, then you need to improve your level of English.
如果你本身英语水平不够，那你要先提升自己的英语水平了
But it is also true that a lot of people in China, in my opinion, don’t do as well as they should do.
但是在我看来，中国很多考生却没能发挥出自己的英语水平
That’s my opinion both examining and teaching.
这一点我在阅卷和教课中都深有感触
And the reason for that is because people are giving themselves wrong direction about what is required.
原因就是考生弄错了考试要求
So in terms of material, for the test preparation, for the general English,
所以关于备考材料的选择
You should enroll in good course but you should use a general English course at the level that you are at.
首先要选择好符合自己英语水平的教程
Use one of the courses which is used globally. Huge successful.
用全球通用的，权威的教程
For test preparation, gain the key material to go to.
其次要获得关键的备考材料
Is the Cambridge Official book?
那是那本剑桥官方指导书么？
Which has a lot of questions in.
里面有各种题目
I think everybody knows about those.
我觉得大家都知道
Also I recommend looking at the band descriptives for speaking and writing if you’re confused about what is required.
如果你还不清楚口语写作考试的要求是什么，我建议你看看评分标准
When I’m teaching I always show people these descriptives.
我教课的时候常常会给我的学生看
It is public available. You can read what people are looking for.
这是公开发布的，大家都可以找得到并了解到考官看重的是什么
When I hear students often ask me, what’s about this, what’s about that, will this make my score go up, will this make my score go down.
学生常常会问，这样可以吗，那样可以吗，这样会让我得高分么，那样会让我得低分么
Actually, examiners don’t have a particular instruction about any of these.
实际上，考官对这些都没有具体统一的指导
They have the descriptives which they interpret in a hopefully reasonable way.
他们会根据自己的经验来合理解读评分标准
So for your materials, start off with this.
所以在选择备考材料时先从评分标准看起吧
it is clear, there is nothing secret about it.

It tells you what is required.
就是明明白白告诉你要求是什么
And start off with the Cambridge official material.

Now in the case of the four skills, reading and listening you can practice.
关于听说读写四部分，阅读和听力是你自己可以练的
Because you’ve got the answers.
因为你手里有答案
So you can get good direct feedback on how you are doing.
你可以很直接的判断出自己做得怎么样
If your score is way off, and you try practising for a while, it’s not still improving,
如果你的分数不尽如人意，自己也练习挺久了但是却不见提高，
you need to move back and improve your overall level of language.
你就需要回过头来先提高一下自己的整体英语水平了
In the case of speaking and writing, this is more challenging.
口语和写作会更有挑战性
because you can’t get the things, the feedback.
因为你没有办法得到反馈
You can’t check what your mark will be of a particular answer to a particular question.
你无法知道对于某道题你的回答会得多少分
And unfortunately what that means is that people are then easily persuaded by unreliable material on the Internet.
不幸的是，这就意味着很多人就很容易被网上不可靠的材料迷惑了
This is what you’ve got. This is what you’ve got.
你这样会得多少分，你那样会得多少分
People ask the question is this how do I get band7, how do I get this.
人们老是问我怎么才能得7分
Is this going to make my score go up？

This is, in my opinion, 98% rubbish and unhelpful.
在我看来，这些98%都是没用的信息
Not just unhelpful but damaging to you.
不止没用还会妨碍你得高分
And the results are a lot of people don’t do anyway near they should do.
结果就是很多人的得分并不符合他的水平
Just because they’re paying too much attention to this kind of online unreliable information from people who are not qualified to say what examiners are looking for.
就是因为他们太依赖网上那些不可靠的资料了，这些资料的提供者没有资质去评判考官们看重的是什么。
The best guide is to read it, read the descriptives.
最好的方法就是研究评分规则了
and of course, then try to find some teacher someway of getting feedback on what you’re doing.当然，最好找到可以给你反馈的老师
This point is not to have a random teacher.
这不是说随随便便找个老师就可以了
You have to find a teacher who is definitely qualified to be able to tell you how the examiner will interpret what you have done.
一定要找有有相关资质的人，他可以告诉你考官会怎么评判你的答案
That doesn’t mean they have to be the examiner.
这不是说一定要找考官
They can just be doing that for a long time.
也可以是在雅思方面有经验的人
But you’re absolutely sure that they can advice you on natural language.
但是一定要确保这个老师可以给你恰当的建议
(7.46)What kind of register？what is that does well and what is that doesn’t do so well？

And that’s a challenge.

So that isn’t a easy way.

If this is a easy way, people won’t struggle so much.
不然的话也不会那么多人一直停滞不前了
But you do have to try to find a reliable guide.
但是一定要找到可靠指导
But there are other kinds of materials you can use to help.
你还可以用其他的材料
And I will suggest you to find some natural real language material.
我建议去找一些地道的语言素材
And one of the best sources of things like that are newspapers, and other mainstream media,
报纸或者其他主流媒体是很好的来源
for example, the BBC, where there has a lot discussion programs.
比如，BBC会有许多讨论节目
That the kind of language that you need to use for your speaking and writing.
里面使用的是你口语写作中应该使用的地道英语
But it’s also the kind of language that will help you to improve your listening and reading,
同时也会帮助你提高听力和阅读
both from the articles and from the audio you can listen to online.
你可以看英文文章或者网上听音频
That material you can be sure is the kind of language which is required both for receptive and productive skills in the IELTS exam.
这些材料所使用的英语就是你听说读写应该用到的地道的英语
So if you take all of that together, the Cambridge questions, other questions you can gather online,
所以如果你准备周全，有剑桥官方题以及其他网上搜集到的习题，
Those are perfectly good-gathered questions because that just give you materials to practice with.
这些精心收集的题都是给你练习用的
The band descriptives and real language material from material that aim to educate neutral register sources that include good newspapers, broadcasting like the BBC,
报纸，BBC广播等以教授地道英语为目的的资料上所使用的英语，以及评分规则要求的地道英语
that kind of language that you know is going to be helpful for you.
这种地道的英语会对你很有帮助
And if you use that material and go over again and again,
如果你一遍遍地温习这些材料
and of course ideally find somebody who you’re 100% sure is qualified, qualified means that you’re sure you can rely on, to give you accurate feedback on what you’re doing.
并且找到百分百有资质的可靠的老师，他对你的表现给出准确的反馈
That’s good.

But if you haven’t got that, you can still work on improving your language because you know if you’ve got it from the BBC or you’ve got it from good newspaper, The Guardian, the Telegraph，the Times,from the UK,
但是如果你找不到材料或者老师，你也可以继续提升自己英语水平，因为如果你是是从BBC或者从其他报纸上找到素材，比如英国的《卫报》《电讯报》《泰晤士报》等
you could know the language is accurate.
那么你可以确认这些材料上使用的英语是可以准确无误的
Don’t pick it randomly from some internet site even if lots of people say this is a good sit because you really don’t know.
别随随便便从什么网站上收集素材，即便是很多人都对这个网站赞不绝口，因为你无法确保它的准确性
And my experience teaching and examining is that clearly that a lot of people have a not clear idea.
我的教学和阅卷经验告诉我，很多人都不清楚这些
Start with the official material and add to that.
从官方材料开始着手准备，然后添加些别的
But only adding staff that you have great confidence in.
但是要选择那些你对正确性有把握的材料
(11.12)Beyond the test preparation, beyond that, go back to general language, general language improvement will definitely transfer across directly to test score improvement.

If you follow this standard circle rather than endless chasing around the internet, looking for quick ways to improve,
如果你跟着标准的材料走，而不是在网上漫天找捷径，
which in the end are not quick ways at all but slow ways that only rare to improvement,
then I think you can get your best score.
因为捷径最后其实对于提高没有什么用处
My experience is that a great many students in China,
根据我的经验，许多中国学生
because people are confused about what is required, are not doing anyway near their best in the speaking and the writing test.
因为不知道要求是什么而在口语写作考试中发挥得不尽人意
That’s why the results are not good.
结果也就可想而知了
That if people have good guidance, focusing on the basic what is required,
如果可以得到正确的引导，关注基本的评分要求，
are you doing it？
问一下自己你照着做了么？
and are you getting feedback？
得到反馈了么？
This help you make sure you’re doing it.
这样你就可以确保自己是在一点点提高了
Scores can jump up.
分数也就可以逐步提高了
So select your material means being sure of what you are doing what you’re using and in the way cutting out material.
所以挑选材料是指你要确保你在做什么，用的什么，筛去了什么材料
It is just important what you pick, what you cut out and choose not to use, not rely on, not refer to is just as important as what you do choose to learn from
你选择做什么很重要，你不做什么，不用什么也很重要
and to use reliable guide to test preparation.
也要找到值得信赖的指导来检验成果
So I hope that, there is no simple way for things to happen quickly.
我觉得，没有什么快速的捷径
But I think with a lot of people that kind of selective-careful approach can make a big difference in a quite short tome.
对于大部分人而言，这种仔细精选的方法就可以在短期里大有效果了
