Alice was beginning to getvery tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, ‘and what is the use of a book,’ thought Alice ‘without pictures or conversation?’

爱丽丝和姐姐一起坐在岸边，没什么事情可以做，渐渐的就觉得厌倦了。她朝姐姐看的那本书瞥了一两眼，发现里面既没有图画也没有对话，于是就想，“一本书里面既没有图画，又没有对话，那这本书还有什么意思呢？”

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

爱丽丝在心里盘算着，（这可不是一件容易事，因为炎热的天气让她昏昏欲睡、头脑发昏）。做个雏菊花环到底有没有那么好玩，值得她爬起来去摘雏菊呢？正在这时，一只红眼睛的白兔从她身边跑了过去。

There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, ‘Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!’ (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of his waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

这本身没什么稀奇的，而且接下来爱丽丝听到兔子说话也没觉得有什么稀奇的，她听到这个兔子在自言自语的说，“哦！天哪天哪！，我要迟到了！”（爱丽丝事后想一想，觉得自己应该感到奇怪才对，但是在当时，似乎所有这一切都再自然不过了）当兔子竟然从他的马夹口袋里掏出一只怀表，看了看后又加快了脚步之后，爱丽丝马上站了起来，因为她突然想到，以前可从没见到过一只兔子会穿着马甲，或者从马甲口袋里掏出怀表来。在强烈的好奇心的驱使下，爱丽丝追着兔子向前跑去，正好看到兔子扑通一下跳到篱笆底下的一个大大的兔子洞里。
