Good morning
Today, I’ll teach you an idiom that is quite common in American English. It relates to the sport of baseball, but, can be used for business and in many other ways. Even in casual conversation. Learn this idiom and use it. You’ll sound more like a native English speaker.
Idiom
ballpark figure
A ‘ballpark’ is a place where baseball is played. Usually, they are quite big. This idiom is a guess or estimate of something. For example, if someone asks you how many people were attending a concert or a play, you might respond with a guess of perhaps 1,000 or 2,000 people. It isn’t an exact number and shouldn’t be relied upon too seriously.
Practice
Tom asked me how much I paid for my car. I really don’t remember but it was somewhere in the ballpark of $10,000.
My boss asked me to give him a ballpark figure of how much it cost to buy the equipment.
I asked my daughter to give me an idea of how much her college tuition would be. She said that a ballpark figure would be about $15,000.
Sally asked what time we’d leave. I didn’t know exactly so I gave her a ballpark time of about 7 o’clock.
Learn this idiom and use it. You’ll likely hear it if you travel in a native English speaking country. It will be quite useful to you.
That’s all for today.
