Good morning

I’ll teach you an idiom today that you can use often and that you’ll hear quite often. It means that something is unbelievable. Even more than unbelievable, when you use this idiom, you are saying that you don’t likely believe whatever you’re being told or heard or read. So, when you use it, you are expressing doubt about something.

Idiom

far fetched

‘Fetch’ is a word that I’ve often heard Chinese English speakers using when they want to say ‘get’ something. In fact, we don’t use ‘fetch’ this way in American English. We use it when talking about a dog chasing a ball or stick or going to get something to bring back to us. We say that he ‘retrieves’ the ball or stick or whatever he is bringing back to us. So, be careful how you use that word.

On the other hand, ‘far-fetched’ is different. It is just an expression that shows possible doubt about something.

Practice

The story the little boy told about the monster was a little far-fetched.

When we heard the story about the UFO, we found it to be a bit far-fetched.

Bobby said that his dog ate his homework. The teacher thought that was a little far-fetched.

The man who told us that he could fly seemed to be a little far-fetched in his ideas.

Learn this idiom and use it. You’ll sound more like a native English speaker.

That’s all for today.

Goodbye for now.

I hope you have a wonderful day!
