Kataleya watches television from her bed. She says the long months of uncertainty and trauma at the border are wearing her down. “People see me happy, but they don’t know how I feel inside. I’m sad inside,” she says. She often wonders what she’s done to deserve the suffering she’s endured.

In Tijuana, the United States is tantalizingly close. One night in late December, Kataleya was on the beach overlooking the border wall when she saw two figures slip through from Tijuana to San Diego, sprinting off into the darkness. They achieved in a few moments what has eluded her for so long.
