The first real Hollywood studio film to feature an all East Asian cast since “The Joy Luck Club”, almost 25 years ago. “Crazy Rich Asians” is based on the novel of the same name written by Kevin Kwan in 2013.

It was a big box office hit in most countries (except China) upon its release and is likely to see the sequel novels also made into feature films.

Nick Young (Henry Golding), son and heir of an ultra wealthy Singapore family, brings his American girlfriend Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. However, Rachel is unaware that Nick is super rich and must battle with Nick’s family led by his mum, Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh) for acceptance.

Despite its cultural importance on the American cinema landscape, this film is just a breezy, flashy romcom with a lot of beautiful scenery to capture your imagination. Yes, there are a lot of scenes explaining Asian culture and especially that of the rich and famous, but the movie is light on plot.

It is a romantic comedy, well acted and sentimental but it is hardly anything we haven’t seen before. Having seen my fair share of Asian romcoms, this doesn’t do much for me, but it is interesting to see Hollywood back big money into this film. It’s success will hopefully open the door further and encourage more diversely cast movies in the future.
