A parable is told of a farmer who owned an old mule. The mule fell into the farmer's well. The farmer heard the mule ”braying”—or whatever mules do when they fall into wells. After carefully assessing the situation, the farmer felt sorry for the mule, but decided that either the mule nor the well was worth saving. Instead, he called his neighbors together and told them what had happened and asked them to help carry dirt to bury the old mule in the well and put him out of his misery.
Initially, the old mule was panicked! But as the farmer and his neighbors continued shoveling and the dirt hit his back, a thought struck him. It suddenly dawned on him that every time a shovel load of dirt landed on his back: he should shake it off and step up! This is what the old mule did, blow after blow. ”Shake it off and step up...shake it off and step up...shake it off and step up!” he repeated to encourage himself.
No matter how painful the blows, or distressing the situation seemed, the old mule fought ”fear” and just kept right on shaking it off and stepping up! You guessed it! It wasn't long before the old mule, hit and exhausted, stepped proudly over the wall of that well! What seemed like it would bury him, actually end up blessing him. All because of the manner in which he handled his adversity.
—THAT’S LIFE! If we face our problems and respond to them positively, and refuse to give into panic, bitterness, or self-pity.
The adversities that come along to bury us usually have within them the very real potential to benefit us!

不管泥土打在身上有多痛，或这个情形看起来有多痛苦，骡子坚持与“恐惧”作斗争，不断地把身上的泥土抖落，并踩在脚下！猜猜最后结局怎样？不多见，老骡子虽然被击打得筋疲力尽，但是最终骄傲地走出了那口井！这个看似要埋葬它的行为，事实上却救了它。正是这头老骡子面对灾难时的态度使它摆脱了厄运。
这就是生活！我们遇到困难时应该积极地面对，不向恐惧、痛苦或自哀低头。
通常，那些发生在我们身上且要葬送我们未来的逆境，同时潜藏着对我们有利的因素。
