'Gaokao, the national college entrance exam, is not the only route to a promising future for those born in the 2000s, a new survey shows. 

一项新调查显示，对00后来说，高考并非通向美好未来的唯一途径。

The survey, conducted by portal website Sina, suggests over half of respondents born in the 2000s believe the gaokao is no longer a "life-changing matter". 

这项由门户网站新浪进行的调查显示，过半00后受访者认为，高考不再是改变命运的事情。

Nearly half the polled students - who will sit for the upcoming gaokao - and 70% of interviewed parents said the gaokao is more an opportunity to enrich life experiences. 

近半参加即将到来的高考的受访学生和7成受访家长称，高考更像是丰富人生经历的一次机会。

The new generation has more choices in higher education, the survey indicated. In addition to sitting for the test, a traditional way for students to be admitted to institutions of higher learning, more than one-fourth of those polled plan to receive higher education through pursuing degrees overseas, attending independent college admission tests or applying for art majors. 

调查显示，新生代有更多机会获得高等教育。除了参加高考这种高等学府录取学生的传统方式，超过1/4的受访学生计划通过海外求学、参加高校自主招生入学考试或报考艺术类专业的方式接受高等教育。

This year, 9.75 million students, a record high, are expected to attend the gaokao, scheduled for June 7 and 8.

今年，预计将有创纪录的975万考生参加高考。高考定于本月7-8日进行。

White-furred animals may die out

White-furred animals are in danger of dying out because climate change is causing a fall in snow cover, leaving them exposed and vulnerable, a new study suggests. 

一项新研究指出，白毛动物正面临灭绝的危险，由于气候变化导致冰雪覆盖范围减少，使得白毛动物难以藏身、易受攻击。

Scientists in Poland have been following the worrying case of the white-coated weasel. Researchers have discovered that between 1997 and 2007 the number of days with permanent snow cover in Poland Białowieża Forest halved from 80 to 40.

波兰的科学家一直在追踪白鼬这种令人担忧的状况。研究人员发现，1997-2007年间，波兰比亚沃维耶扎原始森林被长期冰雪覆盖的天数减半，从80天缩至40天。

This means the little creatures are being caught out in a completely unsuitable environment, where they are easy prey for predators like foxes and crows. 

这意味着这种小动物将和环境格格不入，很容易被狐狸和乌鸦等捕食者捕食。

The team at the Polish Academy of Sciences found that on days when there was little winter snow cover, the total number of white-coated weasels they managed to capture fell to as low as 20% of estimated population, suggesting the rest had been killed. 

波兰科学院的研究团队发现，在冬雪覆盖范围很小的日子里，他们能捕捉到的白鼬的数量下降到了估算的猎物总数的20%，这意味着另外那部分白鼬已被杀死。

As the snow cover increasingly gives way to a landscape of greens and browns, the problem is likely to affect other white-furred mammals and birds living in areas vulnerable to climate change such as the Arctic fox.

Clothes reveal weight issues

It's commonly said that you can tell a great deal about a person by the clothes they wear. Now new research suggests that choice of garment color is a predictor of body mass index (BMI). 

常言道，你可以通过一个人的衣着了解此人。如今新研究认为，可以从人们对服饰颜色的选择看出其身高体重指数(BMI)。

The findings reveal that darker and multicolor clothes are preferred by women with higher BMIs, while men with larger BMIs are more likely to choose black or white garments. The study also suggests that the size and color of garments purchased can be indicators of weight problems. 

调查结果显示，BMI更高的女性喜欢颜色更深和色彩斑斓的服饰，而BMI更高的男性则更可能选择黑色或白色的服饰。该研究还认为，人们购买的服饰的尺寸与颜色是体重问题的指标。

Online clothing purchase choices could be used to promote non-judgmental messages about weight-management and preventing unwanted weight gain.

Hot temperatures lower exam results

In years with hotter weather, pupils are likely to perform less well in exams, according to a major study from researchers at Harvard and other US universities. There is a "significant" link between higher temperatures and lower school achievement, economic researchers said. 

哈佛等美国大学的研究人员开展的大型研究指出，在天气更为炎热的年份，学生的考试成绩会变差。这些经济学研究员称，更高的气温和更为不佳的考试成绩之间存在"重大的"关联。

The study suggested hotter weather made it harder to study in lessons in school, and to concentrate on homework out of school. Colder days did not seem to damage achievement - but the negative impact began to be measurable as temperatures rose above 21C. 

研究指出，天气更炎热的时候，学生在校上课会更困难，在校外做作业时也更难集中注意力。冷天似乎不会影响成绩，但是当气温升到21摄氏度以上时，负面影响就开始显现了。

Researchers calculated that for every 0.55C increase in average temperature, there was a 1% drop in learning. The reduction in learning accelerated once temperatures rose above 32C and even more so above 38C. The study says a practical response could be to use more air conditioning.

研究人员估计，一年的平均气温每升高0.55摄氏度，学习成绩就会下降1%。一旦气温升到32摄氏度以上，学习成绩的下滑速度就会加速，气温升到38度以上后更是如此。研究称，较为实际的应对措施就是多开空调。
