Book Review:

Many years ago I read Orwell's 1984, the prescient story of Winston Smith and life in a totalitarian society where all reality is defined by Big Brother, who is always watching. But recently I reread the book (first published in 1948 and available in a number of softcover editions) and its power struck me as never before. Actually I listened to the book, the complete text read by Frank Muller, an actor and superb reader who works for Recorded Books, out of Maryland. In 10 hours, Muller's staccato voice brought the text frighteningly to life. Exiting my car after a listening session, I was shaken; each time I turned on the cassette deck the nightmare returned, in broad daylight. Muller's performance (he does all the voices flawlessly) is one of the best renditions of a book I have ever read. The last line of the text, that famous last line, "He loved Big Brother," is sad beyond belief. I owe much to Frank Muller, and George Orwell for allowing me to feel what real loss of freedom would be like. It scared me a lot. It scares me still."hico Enterprise Record, October 1991
