TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE READING

The following tips will help you become a more successful reader.

1 Preview the text
Before you start reading a text, it's important to have some idea of the overall topic. Look at the title, photos, captions, and any maps or infographics. Skim the text quickly, and scan for any key words before reading in detail (see pages 11 and 31).

2 Use vocabulary strategies
here are some strategies to use if you find a word or phrase you're not sure of:
• Look for definitions of new words within the reading passage itself (see page 101).
• Identify the part of speech and use context to guess the meaning of homonyms and new words (see pages 136 and 155).
• Use a dictionary if you need, but be careful to identify the correct definition.

3 Take notes
Note-taking helps you identify the main ideas and details within a text. It also helps you stay focused while reading. Try different ways of organizing your notes, and decide on a method that best suits you (see pages 108 and 127).

4 Infer information
Not everything is stated directly within a text. Use your own knowledge, and clues in the text, to make your own inferences and "read between the lines."

5 Make connections
As you read, look for words that help you understand how different ideas connect. For example:
• words that signal reasons (see page 45)
• words that indicate sequence (see pages 82 and 87)
• words that show degrees of certainty (see page 169)

6 Read critically
Ask yourself questions as you read a text. For example, if the author presents a point of view, are enough supporting reasons or examples provided? Is the evidence reliable? Does the author give a balanced argument? (see pages 59, 96, 164, and 169)

7 Create a summary
Creating a summary is a great way to check your understanding of a text. It also makes it easier to remember the main points. You can summarize in different ways based on the type of text.
For example:
• timelines or chain diagrams (see page 82)
• T-charts (see pages 73 and 164)
• concept maps (see page 54)
• Venn diagrams (see page 163)
• outline summaries (see page 141)
