Modal verbs (情态动词) are auxiliary verbs (助动词) that we can use to show ability, might, obligation, or opinion.
They include can, could, may, might, should, have to, must, and need to, etc.
1. We can swim. (can = ability) We can do it.
2. We should talk to the general manager. (should = opinion)
3. We have to get a visa to visit Canada. (have to = obligation)
Modal verbs are followed by the bare infinitive (the infinitive without to).
I could help him. (could= modal, help = bare infinitive)
