More than a thousand years ago the Christian church named November 1 All Saints Day.
This was a special day to honor the saints and other people who died for their religion.
The Europeans of that time also believed that the spirits of the dead would visit the earth.
They worried that evil spirits would cause problems or hurt them. So on that night people wore costumes that looked like ghost or other evil creatures.
They thought if they dressed like that, the spirits would think they were also dead and not harm them.
And the term “trick or treat" first appeared in 1927 in Canada. No one knows for sure how or why that particular term came to be.

He tricked the Devil into guaranteeing that he wouldn’t go to hell for his many and various sins.
Trick sb. into doing sth.用计谋诱使某人做某事
But when Jack died, he found he was barred from heaven for his misdeed. He doomed him to wander the surface of the earth eternally with only an ember of hellfire to light his way.
