America’s S&P 500 stock market index ended the first quarter slightly higher than it was at the turn of the year—an outcome that seemed unlikely after a turbulent start to 2016.
Share prices were helped over the line by doveish remarks from Janet Yellen, head of the Federal Reserve.
The dollar fell, as the prospect of an increase in American interest rates receded.
