Hello and welcome to this programme. I’m Norman, and this is the very first episode of this new programme which is to be named. For the time being, let’s just call it “Norman’s English Podcast”. As the first episode, I’m going to introduce who I am, why you should listen and what can you expect in this programme. It’s gonna be shorter than what others will be in the future. The average one should be around half an hour.

Alright, so who am I? I’m a linguist and a BD professional. I define myself as a linguist as I’ve been trained as an interpreter and translator in the University of Leeds, with the MA Programme Conference Interpreting and Translation Studies. Interpreting and languages are always my passion, and I’m still working as an interpreter and transcreator on a freelance basis. But what is BD? BD is short for Business Development. My current full-time job is BD Executive of an international consulting company. You can easily link the word BD with networking. We do need to meet with clients from across the world, identify project leads and give presentations in front of key decision makers, so networking and communication skills are of great importance, though I would not underemphasize some other qualities such as teamwork and so on and so forth. On that note, this job allows me to work with people from different regions and countries, both inside or outside of this organization. Let’s see, as well as being an interpreter and BD executive, I’m interested in many other things.

- Travelling. I’ve been to most of Europe and many provinces in China. It could be a separate episode when we are talking about travelling.

- Reading. I like reading novels in both Chinese and English. Some recent books that I’ve read include Ferryman, The Kite Runner, A Splendid Suns, And the Mountains Echoed.

- Writing. As much as reading, I like writing on my own, most of which are proses.

- And certainly music. I cannot live without music. In fact, no one can. I mean when you are walking or doing your own business, some songs or melody can just come and linger in your mind.

In fact, I have loads of things to share, but it will come in the future episodes (if I can keep updating). Hmm, that’s so much about me, then why you should listen?

There may be several reasons when you are listening to this programme. You might be an English learner who is trying to improve your listening and speaking sills, or you may be just interested in how it feels to work with a foreigner, particularly when you are of similar age. Is there any cultural difference? Are there more commons or differences when it comes to daily work and/or lifestyle? If you are interested in any of these topics, this is the right programme for you.

And then, what can you expect in this programme. I’m still trying to find out more ways to do this, but for the moment, it’s more about dialogues. In each episode, I’m going to invite a friend (who can be British, German, French, etc,) and ask some questions (their impression, unique experience in China, etc.). An interesting round could be what I call “Challenging Stereotypes” -let’s be honest, just as people of other countries have some stereotypes toward China, we do the same. They are not necessarily positive or negative, but sometimes can be wrong. So in this round, I’m going to just list these stereotypes and ask them to either accept or challenge. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. Of course, if you are interested in improving English, I would also love to share some of my experience.

So, that’s just a little bit information about this programme. Now I’m also interested in you, and your expectation of this programme, so if you have any questions for me, if there are any questions you would like me to ask in the dialogues with the guest speakers, just leave your messages in the comment column. Now at the end of each podcast I will actually ask you a question and I really want this to be an interactive podcast, which means that you can email me your answers to the question that I will ask you at the end of the podcast and it will be a chance for you to tell me what you think about some of the things that we’ll be talking about. So if you want to email me you can write to this address, its: kelang_xia@163.com and I’ll be very glad to hear from you.

So, I’d like to end this podcast with a question which I would like you to answer through the email address and the question is: What would you like me to talk about in this programme? It could be a question about perhaps how does it feel to work with a foreign colleague or it could be a question about English – if you’ve got a question about how to improve English pronunciation or accent, I’m happy to answer your questions on the podcast. So, that’s the first question: what would you like me to talk about? And that’s it, that’s the end of the podcast. Don’t forget you can email me at kelang_xia@163.com. I’m very much looking forward to hearing from you in the future, so that’s it. Bye~~
