make up v. 编造 +story、fact等
turn out to be 结果是……，有点类似之前学过的end up doing的结构。但是turn out to be后面经常接比较出人意料的结果。

in one’s presence 在……在场的情况下：
比如：有他在场，我什么都不想说：I don’t want to say a word in his presence.
ramification n. 影响、后果，与result有点相似，但存在细微差别，这个词表示的后果，通常都是早期不明显的。

regular adj. 规律性的

by mere/sheer chance adv. 纯属意外
