One of my wishes is that those darktrees,

So old and firm they scarcely showthe breeze,

Were not, as 'twere, the merest maskof gloom,

But stretched away unto the edge ofdoom.

I should not be withheld but thatsome day

Into their vastness I should stealaway,

Fearless of ever finding open land,

Or highway where the slow wheel poursthe sand.

I do not see why I should e'er turnback,

Or those should not set forth upon mytrack

To overtake me, who should miss mehere

And long to know if still I held themdear.

They would not find me changed fromhim they knew—

Only more sure of all I thought wastrue.
