W:Yes, especially inthose big cities.

W:Because the food isgood, the service is fast and the prices are low.

M:Oh, that’s good. Then whichrestaurant is the most well-known?

W:McDonald’s. By 1982, there were7,063 McDonald’s in the world, and about 1,283of them were in other countries, such as Japan, Germany, England and Australia.

M:I see. How about theservice and the food?

W:Well, the employeesthere are helpful and polite, and the tables and floors are quite clean. Mostimportantly, customers can get the same food at any McDonald’s in any state of thecountry. The food, of course, is quite good. The French fries, hamburgers andsandwiches—all are specially prepared. Workers would buy their lunches therebecause the food tastes better than the lunches from home.

M:Who is the owner ofMcDonald’s?

W:It was first owned bytwo brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald. Then, in 1961, Ray Kroc bought thename and most of their restaurants for 2.7 million; now he is the owner.

Mr. Finch waslooking forward to a quiet life, but in the summer holidays he got a shock.Hundreds of tourists came to the seaside village. The design of Mr. Finch’s cottage wasattractive and many of the tourists came to see it. From morning till nightthere were tourists outside the cottage. They kept looking through the windowand many of them even went into Mr. Finch’s garden. He decidedto drive the unwelcome visitors away, so he put up a notice on the window. Thenotice said, “If you want to satisfy your curiosity, come in and look around. The price is 5 pounds.”Mr. Finch was sure that the visitors would stop coming, but he was wrong. The number of visitors increased and Mr. Finch spent a lottime showing them around his cottage. “I came here not to work as a guide,” hesaid to himself unhappily. In the end, he sold the cottage and bought a smallmodern house. It was an uninteresting little place and no one wanted to see it.But it was certainly quiet.
