Oreo to launch GoT cookie

With the final season of Game of Thrones (GoT) debuting in just over a month, cookie giant Oreo is releasing "For the Throne" themed cookies. Oreo confirmed earlier this week on Instagram that GoT themed cookies are happening. Instagram food blogger @candyhunting shared an image of what GoT Oreo's packaging may look like.

The cookies are rumored to be the traditional chocolate wafers and vanilla cream, but with GoT designs modeled after the show's White Walkers, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and House Stark. The blogger said the cookies will be out before the debut of the final season.

Postpartum depression drug

The first drug specifically targeted at treating postpartum depression in new mothers has been approved, the US Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday. The drug, sold as Zulresso, is delivered as a continuous intravenous infusion over the course of 60 hours, the FDA said.

The New York Times reported the drug works quickly – within two days – and costs $20,000 or more. "Postpartum depression is a serious condition that, when severe, can be life-threatening."

"Women may experience thoughts about harming themselves or harming their child," said Tiffany Farchione, acting director of the Division of Psychiatry Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that postpartum depression affects one in nine women nationally.

Marriage rate hits lowest

Only 7.2 people out of every 1,000 got married in China last year, the lowest marriage rate since 2013, according to the National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Civil Affairs. A major reason for the declining marriage rate is the shift toward people marrying later, according to Shi Zhilei, director from the Demography and Health Research Center at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law.

Other contributing factors are China's declining population and the rising cost of living, said Pan Jianlei, a professor at the Beijing Municipal Party School. The marriage rate is relatively low in China's most developed regions.

For example, as of the end of last year, in Shanghai only 4.4 people out of every 1,000 people married, the lowest rate in the country. Tianjin, Guangzhou, and Beijing also recorded low marriage rates. The acceleration of urbanization raises the economic burden on urban dwellers, which makes them less likely to marry and have children, said Pan.

'Snowplow' takes toll on kids

Move over, helicopter parents. "Snowplow parents" are the newest embodiment of a hyper-intensive parenting style. "Helicopter parenting, the practice of hovering anxiously near one's children, monitoring their every activity, is so 20th century," said an article in The New York Times.

"Some affluent mothers and fathers now are more like snowplows: machines chugging ahead, clearing any obstacles in their child's path to success, so they don't have to encounter failure, frustration or lost opportunities." Taken to the extreme, this type of parenting can be seen in the recent college admission scandal.

However, it's not only affluent parents practicing snowplow parenting. This parenting has become the most popular way to raise children, regardless of income, education or race. Snowplow parenting is a backwards approach, said Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former dean of freshmen at Stanford. "The point is to prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid," she added.
