Good morning.

Today I’m going to teach you some common English expressions. There are more than a thousand common English phrases or expressions, so, today we will start with three.

Phrases/Expessions

a few
a little
a lot

Practice

a few - this expression is responding to something or referring to something that is countable.

Question: How many chickens are there?
Answer: Only a few.
Meaning: Perhaps there are 2,3 or 4. It means ‘not too many’

a little - A little means a small amount of something that is uncountable.

Question: Are you hungry?
Answer: Yes. A little.
Meaning: You want something to eat, but maybe not too much.

a lot - A lot means you want something very much or that there are more of something than you expect. It can refer to something that is countable or uncountable.

Question: How many ducks are there?
Answer: There are a lot.
You can also say, “There are many.”
You cannot say, “There are much” because, ducks are countable. ‘Much’ is a word that is used for something that is uncountable.

Practice these phrases over and over, many times. Get used to them so that you can say them easily and quickly.

A few.
A little.
A lot.
