[09:47.28]You may use the blank sheet for note-taking.
[09:50.12]You have THIRTY seconds to preview the gap-filling task.
[10:24.37]Now listen to the talk. When it is over,
[10:28.12]you will be given TWO minutes to complete your work.
[10:33.47]A Speech During Freshmen’s Week
[10:36.65]I would first of all like to welcome you all to the college.
[10:40.96]I know you have all worked hard in order to get here
[10:44.22]and I hope you will find all your effort has been worthwhile
[10:47.70]and that we will be able to help you achieve
[10:49.52]your ambitions as far as possible.
[10:53.41]Please make use of our facilities to the full and
[10:56.39]if you are in any doubt of what we have to offer,
[10:59.69]please do not hesitate to ask.
[11:02.24]I would like to make clear to you your part of the contract,
[11:05.61]which you must fulfil if you wish us to fulfil ours.
[11:09.40]Learning, as I’m sure you realise is a two way process
[11:13.16]and without a significant investment from you,
[11:15.80]all our efforts will come to nothing.
[11:18.80]Now, about class attendance.
[11:21.28]You are required to attend 80% of classes.
[11:24.96]If you do not do so,
[11:26.79]we will not be able to give you a certificate of attendance
[11:29.96]should you require one for any particular purpose.
[11:33.47]In other words,
[11:34.41]we will not regard you as having followed the course at all.
[11:38.31]The compulsory courses are those classes
[11:40.76]you take in your assigned groups.
[11:43.28]In a minute, Mr. Lucas will tell you which group you are in.
[11:47.20]The extra, individual work available in the laboratory
[11:50.71]or the computer room is, of course, optional.
[11:54.24]In addition to classwork,
[11:56.28]you are supposed to put in 3-4 hours a day of private study.
[12:01.05]This year we have changed our methods of assessment,
[12:04.46]in an effort to get away from the formal examination
[12:07.39]and move towards a system which better reflects work done throughout the year.
[12:12.79]You are required to hand in 5 pieces of written work
[12:16.26]as part of your final assessment-
[12:18.65]these you may choose from your class assignments.
[12:21.97]At the end of the course
[12:23.63]there will be a formal examination consisting of 3 three-hour papers.
[12:28.78]You do not have to take the last of these-
[12:31.44]you can submit a 10, 000 word extended essay instead.
[12:36.06]You should discuss the title of this with your tutor.
[12:39.24]You can obtain more details about the examination from your tutor.
[12:43.64]On a more practical note,
[12:45.36]we do not want to have too many rules and regulations,
[12:49.08]but for the sake of public safety and comfort there must be some.
[12:53.60]It is expressly forbidden to smoke in the classrooms
[12:56.86]as this poses a fire hazard.
[12:59.34]We also ask that you do not take food and drink into the classrooms.
[13:04.13]About your dorm.
[13:05.85]You are not permitted to put up overnight guests in your rooms.
[13:09.73]Similarly, we can’t allow you to entertain more than
[13:12.87]5 guests during the day in your rooms,
[13:15.94]as this causes a disturbance.
[13:18.35]If you wish to hold larger parties,
[13:21.16]please reserve the common room for that purpose.
[13:24.33]We hope that you will find these rules reasonable
[13:27.33]and enjoy your stay with us.
[13:29.57]I will now hand you back to Miss Johnson,
[13:32.36]who will assign you to your groups.
[13:34.95]Now, you have TWO minutes to complete your work.
[15:38.21]THIS IS THE END OF SECTION A TALK.
[15:41.62]SECTION B CONVERSATIONS
[15:45.13]In this section you will hear two conversations.
[15:48.05]At the end of each conversation,
[15:49.94]five questions will be asked about what was said.
[15:53.28]Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken ONCE ONLY.
[15:57.82]After each question there will be a ten-second pause.
[16:01.40]During the pause,
[16:02.57]you should read the four choices of A),B),C)and D),
[16:07.69]and mark the best answer to each question on ANSWER SHEET TWO.
[16:12.63]You have thirty seconds to preview the questions.
[16:45.79]Now, listen to the conversations.
[16:49.17]Conversation One
[16:51.06]M: Today we're going to discuss some important questions
[16:54.21]about women and inheritance.
[16:56.63]For example, what happens to a woman when her husband dies,
[17:00.62]and who becomes the rightful owner of his property?
[17:03.95]To help us answer these and other questions,
[17:06.82]we've invited a lawyer, Mrs. Elizabeth Mutwa, to join us.
[17:11.97]Welcome to the show, Mrs. Mutwa.
[17:14.36]W: Thank you.
[17:15.35]M: Mrs. Mutwa, what are some of the concerns
[17:17.77]you have about women and the inheritance laws that affect them?
[17:22.34]W: Every day I meet women whose husbands are dying.
[17:25.46]These women are afraid that they are going to lose everything.
[17:28.62]That is a terrible, desperate feeling.
[17:31.14]M: Yes, to feel that you are going to lose everything is terrifying.
[17:35.33]W: Of course it is.
[17:36.57]And I'm sorry to say that often a woman does lose everything-
[17:39.97]because the property is taken by her husband's relatives.
[17:42.87]We call this property grabbing.
[17:45.64]M: Is there any way to prevent property grabbing
[17:48.44]and return property to the woman?
[17:50.82]W: Yes. Women have legal rights to land and other properties.
[17:55.15]But unfortunately, most women don't know this.
[17:58.03]So they don't take any action.
[18:00.72]M: So, it's important for women to understand what rights they have,
[18:04.55]and how the law works.
[18:06.29]W: Exactly. Once they know the laws,
[18:08.56]they can take steps to make sure
[18:10.30]that they keep their home and their land.
[18:12.83]M: Okay, so I guess that when women come to you for help,
[18:16.85]this is one of the things you recommend-
[18:19.06]learn about the local laws.
[18:21.84]What else can a woman do?
[18:23.84]W: I always recommend that a woman do three things.
[18:26.73]First, discuss the importance of making a will with your husband.
[18:30.76]Encourage him to make a will in the presence of witnesses.
[18:34.16]Number two,
[18:35.37]find out if it is possible to register the home where you live with your husband.
[18:39.83]If you can, you will remain the owner of the land
[18:42.86]and house after your husband's death.
[18:45.47]Number three, get legal advice from a lawyer,
[18:48.85]a paralegal or a local organization that offers this type of assistance.
[18:53.84]They can help you understand your rights and the law.
[18:57.30]M: Mrs. Mutwa, I think the advice that you've offered here
[19:01.21]on the program will help many women.
[19:03.06]Do you think that this kind of property grabbing
[19:05.87]will definitely affect women's lives after their husbands' death?
[19:09.99]W: Definitely.
[19:11.62]Some of the women hope that the inheritance given
[19:13.82]by their husbands would help them out.
[19:16.32]Well, as a matter of fact,
[19:17.89]however, the fact proves that they always lose their things
[19:20.82]left by their husbands as their husbands' relatives always
[19:23.48]ask her to divide the things with them.
[19:25.95]The women have no idea about what she deserves.
[19:28.73]This is the essence of the problem.
[19:30.82]I hope that women should have this kind of awareness
[19:33.68]that they should go to seek for help
[19:35.60]from some professional lawyers.
[19:37.48]M: Thank you for joining us today.
[19:39.72]W: You're most welcome.
[19:41.30]This is the end of Conversation One.
[19:45.08]Questions 1 to 5 are based on Conversation One.
[19:48.72]1.What is the interview mainly about?
[20:02.13]2.According to the interview,
[20:04.97]what is called property grabbing?
[20:18.13]3. Why do women do nothing to prevent property grabbing?
[20:32.04]4.According to the interview,
[20:35.22]what is the way of preventing property grabbing for a woman?
[20:49.50]5.Which of the following is NOT Mrs. Mutwa’s recommendation?
[21:04.77]Conversation Two
[21:07.18]M: What're you doing up so early, Amanda?
[21:09.60]Have you decided to take up jogging in the park like me?
[21:13.27]W: No, Mike. You know I really can't stand jogging.
[21:17.28]I've joined a yoga class at our local fitness center.
[21:20.91]Want to join me?
[21:22.09]M: No way! To the best of my knowledge,
[21:24.85]most enthusiasts are women.
[21:27.26]I'd rather do some weights or cardio at the gym
[21:29.74]than contort my body into painful postures.
[21:33.10]W: At the beginning,
[21:34.77]women go in for it mainly.
[21:36.82]But as its popularity grows,
[21:38.52]men are becoming more receptive to the idea.
[21:41.44]M: No, thanks.
[21:43.15]I think all of this is just a moneymaking gimmick.
[21:46.21]I'm telling you Amanda, don't buy into it!
[21:49.34]W: Mike, we just learn three new postures every day
[21:52.34]and do some meditation.
[21:54.05]My yoga guru is going to teach us about breathing today.
[21:57.69]Did you know that we don't even breathe properly anymore?
[22:01.02]M: Count me out! I don't need anyone to tell me how to breathe!
[22:05.84]Just because celebrities are doing yoga,
[22:08.49]everyone's jumping on the bandwagon.
[22:11.44]W: That's not true! For those who are unaware
[22:13.84]of the yoga way of exercise,
[22:15.78]it uses a combination of breathing exercises along with
[22:19.09]physical movement to free the body
[22:21.46]while the meditation aspect of yoga assists
[22:24.26]in easing the mind and soul.
[22:26.36]You're always reluctant to try something new.
[22:29.12]Give it a chance. You might enjoy it.
[22:31.46]M: Okay, but only if you promise I'll end up with
[22:34.75]a body like Matthew McConaughey!
[22:37.16]W: Don't be stupid, Mike! You know,
[22:39.56]it can't be a thing with an easy start, right?
[22:42.23]The first few classes may be very tough,
[22:44.80]but you stick with it.
[22:46.16]The first major effect you will notice is
[22:48.50]that you'd feel very relaxed after a class.
[22:51.43]After several weeks,
[22:52.65]you'll become stronger,
[22:54.18]more flexible and your posture is improved.
[22:57.29]M: Anyway, to be frank,
[22:59.03]you look great recently.
[23:01.16]W: A couple of days ago,
[23:02.21]my back was so stiff and I couldn't sleep on my stomach anymore.
[23:06.21]It was the yoga that made me feel better.
[23:08.81]M: You mean practicing yoga is better than doing some weights or cardio?
[23:13.46]W: What you say is true in a way.
[23:15.39]Er, everyone knows that yoga is a great way to relieve stress,
[23:19.43]increase circulation and give us a positive attitude.
[23:22.99]There are many benefits of the yoga exercise.
[23:25.86]It is known that yoga also helps provide stress relief
[23:29.31]and health benefits.
[23:30.78]With the fast paced world of today,
[23:32.75]it is easy for an individual to become stressed
[23:35.61]out with the daily schedule and this type of stress
[23:38.64]will definitely affect the body and mind.
[23:41.57]M: But yoga doesn't do a whole lot to build
[23:44.43]lean and toned muscle and burn fat,
[23:46.91]which is what most people want to do.
[23:50.11]W: The cardio maybe neither.
[23:51.96]To be honest,
[23:52.99]intense aerobics should be dependent on
[23:54.85]how old people are and some people
[23:56.78]who have heart diseases are not appropriate
[23:59.40]for the exciting activity.
[24:01.35]Yoga is suitable for all ages of people, you know.
[24:04.04]M: Oh, I am really frustrated, you win!
[24:07.75]Today, I will not take up jogging in the park;
[24:10.63]I'd like to have yoga class together with you!
[24:14.43]This is the end of Conversation Two.
[24:16.78]Questions 6 to 10 are based on Conversation Two.
[24:21.15]6. According to Mike, what do we know about yoga postures?
[24:36.61]7. Which of the following is NOT included in the teaching of yoga?
[24:51.62]8. According to Mike, Why do people go in for yoga?
[25:06.21]9. What is the first important effect once people begin practicing yoga?
[25:21.90]10. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a benefit of yoga?
[25:37.12]THIS IS THE END OF PART Ⅱ LISTENING COMPREHENSION.
