Then, let’s have a look at

let’s have a talk about task 2

看看task 2

So in task 2 some of the things are the same

In task 2, again, you would like to write more than the minimum number words

275, 280, or more

There is no maximum

Task 2, you’ve got 40 minutes to do

You do it after task 1

And I

在这里

strongly recommend that you spend 10 minutes planning your content before you write

Clearly, lots of students don’t do that

because their content is a jumble

You’ve got to you two things to get a good mark in task 2

In some way three things I suppose

One is you’ve got to have ideas, which are relevant to the topic

And, you’ve got to be able to develop those ideas and organize them in your essay

So we’ve got the ideas and the organization of the ideas

Maybe you call it one or maybe you call it two separate items

But it’s structuring the content, the thoughts, if you like

And the second part is expressing those clearly and accurately with your language

But the content has to confirm

doesn’t matter if your English is really good

if your ideas are confused or even more so

if you don’t clearly answer the questions which students

a lot of students don’t

then you will

at least

至少

you will do a lot less well than you should do

And usually you will not do very well at all

So, these are things that you can really sharpen up

on to give yourself the opportunity

to get your best possible mark

Now let’s give you a couple of more specific pieces of advice here

Usually for task 2

对于task 2

I would suggest 4 paragraphs

So in your first paragraph you are going to have the introduction

and then two main paragraphs

and finally your conclusion

Now if the question asks you for your opinion

for example

they might say

‘to what extent you agree or disagree with this view’

or it might say ‘discuss both sides and give our opinion’.

If the question asks you for your opinion,

your opinion must be clear throughout the essay

This is important

There is a scenario where many students go wrong

that their opinion is not clear

they appear to be one-minute writing about one side

another minute writing about the other side

And it is not clear which one

they are consistently agreeing with or disagreeing with

And that’s why I strongly recommend

that when you are writing an opinion essay

or discuss an opinion easy

any essay which asks for your opinion

you make your opinion strong and clear

You put in the introduction

you make it clear in your main paragraphs

and it’s clear in the conclusion as well

If you do that

you are going to do much better than a lot of students do on task achievement

And it’s something which students find it difficult to do for some reason

I’m not quite sure why

But pick a side

It doesn’t matter whether you really have a strong opinion or not

This is just an essay for an exam

Pick a side, stick to it

And in the ‘discuss-and-opinion’ questions

when it says

当它说“discuss both these views, and say which one you agree with, say your opinion”

Then I would suggest in paragraph 2

you discuss the side you don’t agree with

leading up to paragraph 3

the side that you do agree with

And you should balance those two paragraphs

in terms of size that examiners look for a balance to approach

not 80 percent on the one side, 20 percent on the other

50-50 in terms of words

But when you are discussing the other side

you must make it clear

you don’t agree with them

‘Some people think this I don’t agree with them’.

If you do this

the reader knows clearly what you’re thinking all the way through

Much easier to get good mark

And that’s why planning is important

Because lots of students, there is to say

they start quite well

and become confused in the middle

Or they start well written

I can understand them

then become difficult to understand in the middle

Or they start, I know what you’re thinking in the beginning

but half way through

you appear to be thinking something else

None of this is to do with language

this is a thinking issue

a planning issue

because you want to write your best level of essay all the way through

And you could do that

if you give yourself time to plan before you start writing

And another point here is

that student often say

‘can I use personal examples?’ stuff like that

Actually you should use examples

and they will often be personal

because you don’t have a lot of detailed knowledge about topics in task 2

The question says, it says, use examples

of course relevant examples

relevant means you must connect your examples clearly to the points you are making

Use relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience

so it’s telling you to use examples

because one of the things that the examiners look for when they’re marking

when they’re reading it, is that your points need to be developed

You have a point

you expand it

you justify that point

证明它

So I call this paragraph topic expanding examples

But it doesn’t matter what the words are

The point is you take an argument then you logically support it

You don’t put ‘here is a point’

‘here is another point’, ‘here is another point’

And very often if you do that

you don’t really have different points

Anyway

there isn’t any one or two points to make about this topic

You need to expand this point by putting more examples to support it

more information to support it

This is what people do when they write a book

The books might just have one idea

But people can write a chapter with lots of different examples and with different examples

in each chapter in detail

We’re not writing a book

we are writing a short essay

But the principle is

your main point will only be a sentence probably

or a couple of sentences if you’ve got two main points

But you need to develop this argument

What students tend to do often, is repeating

they say the same thing again

but in slightly different words

It’s not really developing

It’s just repeating, really

or expressing the same idea more than once.

You don’t want to do that

you want to build on your idea

And the way to do that is to use detail

which usually means use examples to develop your point

So all of these things are easy, I think, to do

And if you do them

it will help you to get a much better mark

 than you might get otherwise

And remember that

the mark you get is not fixed

It is not like the reading or oral mass test

It is open to the examiner to think ‘this is good’

‘I am going to be on the size of being generous here’.

And why would they do that

Partly you make it easy

and plenty of words are very clearly laid down

partly your organization language is very clear

‘firstly this’, ‘secondly this’,

‘in conclusion I believe this’, ‘I strongly think this’.

Your opinion is clear all the way through

You’ve done all the basis well

to make the examiner feel they can easily assess your essay
