£4B spent for stockpiling

Britons have spent £4 billion stockpiling goods in preparation for a possible no-deal Brexit, new research suggests. One in five people are already hoarding food, drinks and medicine, spending an extra £380 each, according to a survey by the finance provider Premium Credit.

The survey found that about 800,000 people have spent more than £1,000 building up stockpiles before the Oct 31 Brexit deadline. If the UK leaves with no deal, businesses predict there will be short-term supply problems, which the government says it is mitigating.

The super-rich are also importing more luxury cars ahead of the Brexit deadline to avoid tariffs that might be introduced following a hard Brexit. More than 3,800 luxury cars were imported in the past year, a 16% increase on the previous 12 months.

'2nd-hand drinking' harmful

It's easy to imagine how second-hand smoke can impact an innocent bystander. But it's not the only habit that can affect others; "second-hand drinking" is a thing, too. A study in the US has placed its effects on par with second-hand smoking.

Using US national survey data from 2015, research has found that each year, one in five American adults - which is an estimated 53 million people - experience harm because of someone else's drinking. These harms include things like threats or harassment, which was the most commonly cited, as well as physical aggression, drunk driving, and even financial or family problems.

Young people under the age of 25 were mostly on the receiving end. For men, this harm was usually from a stranger and resulted in ruined property, or physical aggression. But for women, the drinker tended to be a family member, causing financial issues or problems in the house.

Local GDP data released

Coastal provinces in East and South China recorded robust economic growth in the first half of the year, despite escalations in trade tensions, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Guangdong also achieved a record-high GDP of 5.05 trillion yuan in the first half, placing it first among all provincial localities, followed by Jiangsu at 4.86 trillion yuan. Growth in provinces in central and western regions accelerated to help them in catching up with their peers in eastern regions in the first half.

In Southwest China, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces and the Tibet autonomous region registered year-on-year GDP growth of at least 9% in the first six months and outperformed peers nationwide, according to the statistics bureau. In the same period, the GDP of Henan, Hubei and Hunan provinces in Central China also expanded faster than the nation's 6.3%.

Huawei gets new extension

The US Department of Commerce announced Monday that it will extend a temporary license loosening restrictions on business deals with Chinese tech giant Huawei for another 90 days. The reprieve came after the Department of Commerce put Huawei and its 68 affiliates on an Entity List in May.

The department on May 20 issued a 90-day temporary license to ease off part of the restrictions. The temporary easing came amid concerns that Huawei's customers in the US will suffer without access to Huawei's services.

In response, Huawei said in a statement later on Monday that "The extension of the Temporary General License does not change the fact that Huawei has been treated unjustly." The company called on the US government to put an end to this unjust treatment and remove Huawei from the Entity List.
