Fast food boss shown door

McDonald's chief executive officer has been pushed out of the company after violating internal policy by engaging in a relationship with an employee, the corporation said on Sunday. The fast food giant said CEO Steve Easterbrook demonstrated poor judgment, and that McDonald's forbids managers from having romantic relationships with direct or indirect subordinates. In an email to employees, Easterbrook acknowledged he had a relationship with an employee and said it was a mistake. "Given the values of the company, I agree with the board that it is time for me to move on," Easterbrook said in the email. Easterbrook had been CEO since 2015.

Acorn craze in South Korea

The booming popularity of acorn-based products is putting the squirrel population in South Korea at risk as human foragers steal the rodent's staple diet. In South Korea food that is made from acorns, including noodles, jelly and powder, has grown in popularity after it was declared a healthy superfood that had the potential to fight obesity and diabetes. As a result, foraging for these ingredients has becoming increasingly common at green campuses, popular hiking trails and anywhere where the oak tree is a common feature of the landscape. But it is a fad that is putting squirrels and other animals that rely on the nut, and the oak trees they come from, for sustenance at risk. A researcher at the National Institute of Forest Science Park Chan-ryul said squirrels needed more than 100 acorns to survive the cold wintry season. But if humans continue to forage for their main source of food there will be no more acorns 50 years from now in South Korea. "We should sympathize with the squirrels' hardship," he said.

E-cigarette online sales ban

China called on companies and e-commerce platforms to stop selling e-cigarettes online, in a bid to curb underage vaping as global health authorities raise alarms about its potential effect on public health. China's tobacco and market regulators ordered companies and individuals making or selling vaping products to close down their sales websites and mobile apps and e-commerce platforms to shut e-cigarette shops and remove all products. It also called for the withdrawal of online e-cigarette ads. Many e-cigarette companies target young people, misleading them with ads suggesting that their products are harmless aids to wean people off smoking, the regulator said. Many portray e-cigarettes as fashionable and trendy to attract minors, it added.

US begins Paris Agreement out

The US began on Monday the process of withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, according to a statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. US President Donald Trump announced in June 2017 that his country would leave the Paris Agreement. Trump announced the withdrawal soon after he took office, citing concerns about the pact's threat to the US economy. According to the agreement, its signatories can only formally request to quit the pact three years after it takes force, which falls upon Nov 4, 2019, and the withdrawal will take effect one year from delivery of the notification, meaning that the US will formally pull out of the pact on Nov 4, 2020. The decision made the US the only nation among nearly 200 signatories that abandoned this global agenda on combating climate change.
