Gustav Leonhardt
Gustav Leonhardt, harpsichordist(大提琴演奏家) and father of the early-music movement, died on January 16th, aged 83.
A CONCERT by Gustav Leonhardt was not like any other. He approached his harpsichord(大键琴) with the air of a mortician(殡葬师), slightly flexing(弯曲) his long, delicate(纤细的) hands. As he played he sat bolt upright(十分笔直), gaunt(枯瘦的 憔悴的) and aquiline(像鹰嘴状的), unsmiling(严肃的) in his crisp(脆的), perfect suit(西装), with his elbows(手肘) held(紧握) close to his sides. No unnecessary gesture, no hint(暗示,线索) of emotion: senza baldanza, as a composer might have marked it. He did not have the look of a man on a mission(执行任务时). But he was(是十足的男人). Mr Leonhardt's life-work was to persuade the world how beautiful the harpsichord was, and how the harpsichord repertoire(保留曲目) should be played. When he first fell in love with it, in the shape of the fairly bad instrument his parents bought for their house at Graveland in the Netherlands, he recognised it as the king of keyboards. Organs(风琴) were noble characters, and he played church organ for years。

Virginals(小建琴,无暇的) were pleasing; he wrote a book on Flemish examples(弗莱芒语范例). But fortepianos(古钢琴) were awful(糟糕), the sound muffling(消声,削弱) all over the place when the hammer(桩锤) hit the keys, which put him off playing his beloved(挚爱的) Mozart; and modern grands(三角钢琴) were unspeakable(难以言喻). None had that direct pluck(弹拨) of plectrum(琴拔) on string(琴弦) for which he loved the harpsichord(大键琴)-though that mechanism was also fearsomely(可怕的) exacting, even "diabolical()恶魔一般的", and that was why he did not smile as he played. It would also have been vulgar(粗俗的). Mr Leonhardt was ever on the watch(提防着) for that, whether in the form of electric lighting, or showy(艳丽的) articulation(关节 清晰发音), or hotel breakfast buffets(自助餐), or Beethoven's Ninth. " That 'Ode to Joy(欢乐颂)', talk about vulgarity(粗野的动作)! And the text! Completely puerile()(孩子气的)! " His own manners were exquisitely(精致地) courteous(有礼貌的); he seemed to have stepped from the past(从远古而来 ), and even a shockingly(不正当地) fast drive(驾驶) in his Alfa Romeo(阿尔法,罗密欧) might end with Mr Leonhardt, lost, finding his way home not by sat-nav(卫星导航) but the stars. When he began to study (大键琴)seriously, at Basel in 1950, the instrument had been neglected, or overlaid (覆盖)with Romantic sweetness(愉快), for decades。
