Fashion Photography

Percy Gilbert is a Beijing based fashion designer. His involvement with high-end fashion goes back to earlier days in London when he worked for many years with leading designer Alexander McQueen. Percy has also worked with famed names in Beijing as he has mentioned in previous features. Percy also has another interest, photography - mainly fashion photography and people photography.
In today's feature Percy is taking about and sharing experiences of 'shooting' at modelling events. Techniques are quite different than normal 'snapping' - the light is often changing, models may move fast on the catwalk. He explains the importance of having a good position to take the best shots - everyone wants in the prized front row.

Track one
As a fashion designer you care about the way things look
But ever since I bought this Canon everyone keeps asking me to take photos for them
The photos I see you taking look like modelling, fashion shots
I was blessed enough this last Chinese Fashion Week to be invited
Every show I was invited to I was put on the front row
This enabled me to get some amazing photos of the shows
There must be techniques, special ways of doing fashion photography.
If I went in with an iPhone I would not get the photos you are getting
That is true - I have tried to do the shows on my phone -it just was not possible
On the iPhone if you are doing videos, videos are great
but when you take photos you get the motion blur - it is very difficult to get great photos
On the Canon, on correct settings you can get some amazing photos
The iPhone - you cannot set the speed, cannot really do the aperture or anything
You cannot set the speed but what I do do sometimes - I watch people next to me who are getting decent photos on their iPhones
I noticed that the ones getting decent photos - they were actually moving at the same pace as the model
That somehow works on the iPhone to get half decent photos
you are doing it much more professionally - you are setting the camera
To be honest I think I have an ‘eye for photos’
I never really learnt what I am doing
I found a good setting on the camera that works really well for fashion shows

What’s your secret, what’s the setting
It is a setting called Tv mode - what it does is it freezes moving objects
You can set the level to what degree you want them to freeze
So even if somebody jumps in the air - you can make them look like they are floating in the air, on this Tv mode
Do you have to set the light at the same time or does it do it automatically
Photography is all about light - that is the trick
Whenever I go to a show or I have to take photos - before the show starts I will start taking practice photos
That way you can set your camera because each show is going to be different
If the lights keep changing, you may have to keep changing your settings
You do not work on automatic modes?
I try not to - especially for the shows I find they do not work so well
I find if an object is moving then I cannot work on automatic
But if it is a still object, then you can
I have noticed a big difference in colour - sometimes you are in ‘automatic’ mode you get the colours all bleached out - not realistic
Setting it using Tv, setting it very carefully, you can get pretty accurate colours
It is all to do with the light balance
Sometimes it is really difficult to get the correct colours
But at least you can set it to a colouring that you like a d find attractive
