The Tale of Run Run Rat
Run Run was a village rat
Who lived in western China
His mother was a pastry cook
His father was a miner
He had an older sister
And a little baby brother
And forty seven cousins too
Who wrestled with each other.
He lived a simple country life
Beside the River Yangtze
Pursuing all the pastimes
Which might take a young rat's fancy
Like taking pigs to market
As the eastern sun was dawning
Then making clever bargains
Til the middle of the morning
The fishing by the riverside
Or digging in the garden
Or weaving baskets from bamboo
Before the shoots could harden
Like rounding up the ducks and geese
And tending to the oxen
Like helping ancient relatives
To put their shoes and socks on
A Quiet life of happy toil
With rustic joys a-plenty
Which would completely satisfy
Nineteen rats out of twenty
And yet for one young village rat
In search of fame and glory
The simple life was not enough....
And so begins my story.
Now Run Run was no average rat
And average rats are clever-
The list of things they're good at
Seems to carry on forever-
Yet everything a rat can do
Young Run Run could do finer
Than any rat you'd care to name
The length and breadth of China.
A rat can run with style and ease
Run Run was even quiker
A rat can charm the birds from trees
Yet RunRun was far slicker
A rat is good at algebra
But Run Run was a master
No Matter what the answer was
He always got there faster.
But most of all young Run Run
Was a creature of ambition
He was from nose to tip of tail
A Rodent with a Mission
And so it was one morning
That he left his humble station
To be the first of all his kind
To travel his great nation.
