The Owl[aʊl] and the Pussycat['pusikæt]
by Edward['edwəd] Lear[liə]
I
The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea[pi] green boat,
They took some honey['hʌni], and plenty of money,
Wrapped[ræpt] up in a five pound[paʊnd] note.
The Owl looked up to the stars[stɑz] above,
And sang[sæŋ] to a small guitar,
“O lovely Pussy['pʊsi]! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!”
II
Pussy said to the Owl, “You elegant['ɛləgənt] fowl[faʊl]!
How charmingly['tʃa:miŋli] sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:['tæri]
But what shall we do for a ring[rɪŋ]?”
They sailed[sel] away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong[bɔŋ]-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy['pɪɡi]-wig[wɪɡ] stood
With a ring at the end of his nose[noz],
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.
III
“Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling ['ʃɪlɪŋ]
Your ring?” Said the Piggy, “I will.”
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey['tɝki] who lives on the hill.
They dined[daɪn] on mince[mɪns], and slices['slaɪsɪz] of quince[kwɪns],
Which they ate[ɛt; et] with a runcible spoon[spʊn];
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand[sænd],
They danced[dæns] by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.
