Dear Jack,
Thank you so much for your letter. Onething I’ve learned after being a middle-school director for twenty years: thereare almost always more than two sides to every story. Although I don’t know thedetails, I have an inkling（n. 【对正在或即将发生的事的】略知） about what may have sparked（spark:n. 火花，火星 v. 冒火星，引发） the confrontation（n. 对抗，冲突） with Julian.
While nothing justifies（justify: v. 证明…正确） striking another student—ever—I also know good friends are sometimes worthdefending. This has been a tough year for a lot of students, as the first yearof middle school usually is.
Keep up the good work, and keep being thefine boy we all know you are.
