31The myth of Prometheus

From Prometheus to Frankenstein, Dr Faustus toOppenheimer, the idea that the quest for knowledgeis somehow forbidden and to seek it, therefore,destructive, has been a constant theme in literature.The myth of Prometheus has influenced westernliterature for over 2000 years. Why? In Greek myth,Prometheus created Man from clay, against thewishes of Zeus. He further angered Zeus bystealing fire by lighting a torch from the Chariot ofthe Sun and taking hot coals to Man.

Writers and painters throughout history have usedthe Promethean myth as an allusion to make twodistinct points: the quest for forbidden knowledgeand the strength to resist oppression. Let's considera few writers who took Prometheus as a theme todiscuss the pursuit of knowledge and where it canlead. The myth first appeared in the Greek epicpoem 'Theogony', written by Hesiod around 700 BC,where Prometheus appears as an upstart tricksterwho steals fire from the gods. 'Prometheus'' means'foresight'' and in Hesiod's account, 'foresight'' isdoomed to get the better of Heaven and so,

to punish his insolence, he is chained to a rockwhere his liver is plucked out and eaten daily by aneagle for all eternity. In Hesiod, the story reinforcesthe theodicy of Zeus, who is wise and just, whilstPrometheus, in over reaching for knowledge thatwasn't his to take, is to blame for humanity's sorrycondition. Aeschylus, 5th Century Greek tragedian,while telling the same story, has a different angle.For him, Prometheus, as well as the bringer of fireand civilization to Man, is also their preserver. Zeushad intended to destroy humanity and create a newrace.

So in this version Prometheus symbolizesresistance to oppression. Frankenstein, or, TheModern Prometheus, was written by Mary Shelleyand was published in eighteen eighteen. VictorFrankenstein is the name of the scientist whocreates the monster. Victor, just like Prometheus,arrogantly assumed the power to act as a Creatorwith no regard for the potential consequences. Inhis quest for knowledge he over reaches thelimitations of human wisdom and like Prometheus,is punished.

Prometheus and Victor rebel against the laws ofnature and are punished with the loss of life andliberty whilst Frankenstein's creation rails againsthis own existence. Mary Shelley's reworking of thePrometheus myth can be interpreted as an allusionto the heedlessness and irresponsibility of Man'spursuit of knowledge at the expense of wisdom. Ithink the Promethean myth retains its power as anallusion, in our technological age, because the pointbeing made is an ethical one: in our quest forknowledge, are we forgetting our moral obligationsto also use this knowledge wisely?
